Smoking hits all-time low in US

Smoking in the US is at an all-time low

Juuling is the latest smoking craze to hit college campuses.

The smoking rate among adults has fallen by almost 33% since 2009, when 20.6% of American's smoked, and by 67% since the survey was first conducted in 1965, when close to 43% of adults reported being current smokers.

Just 13.9% of US adults lit up in 2017, down from 15.5% a year before, according to a survey released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Harm reduction advocates say instead of alarmism over the alleged threats posed by vapor products, users should be taught about the relative risks of those products when compared to smoking.

The Associated Press reports that this is an all-time low.

However, Ms. Koval found troubling the CDC's data on more smoking occurring in rural areas. "We can not let up in this fight because tobacco is still the nation's number one cause of preventable death, killing more than 480,000 people and costing about $170 billion in health care dollars a year".

One thing that stood out during her visit was her jacket, which had the words "I Really Don't Care, Do You?" inscribed on it. The youthful jacket sharply contrasts with the first lady's typically bold, foreign-flavored wardrobe.

That's also down from the previous year's 16%. He explained that this shows that the trends are in the right direction. The decline has coincided with a greater understanding that smoking is a cause of cancer, heart disease and other health problems.

In October, the Truth Initiative released a report titled "Tobacco Nation" about how variations in state laws on cigarettes affect smoking. Since then millions have been spent on health campaigns to raise public awareness regarding smoking. "While the progress is welcome. much more needs to be done to ensure all Americans benefit from policies created to address tobacco use", said Paul Billings, senior vice president. Even though it doesn't have the by-products of tobacco, health experts still believe that people can get addicted to the nicotine in the e-cigarettes.

Just 11 per cent of adults in a metro area of one million people or more smoke, compared to almost 22 per cent in rural areas, it said.

Among teenagers however traditional cigarette smoking is also at an all time low at 9 percent finds this new survey.

13 percent of high school students now use e-cigarettes.

The launch and popularity of e-cigarettes has also played a factor.as 3 percent of adults use them.
