India gears up to celebrate International Yoga Day

The fourth International Day of Yoga was marked world over with enormous enthusiasm.

The idea for International Yoga Day was first proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 2014 United Nations General Assembly address.

It is hard to say just how many people practise yoga around the world today, although some estimate it could be up to around 200 to 300 million. The enthusiasm of getting from "illness to wellness" is spreading from the busy streets of the South Korean capital, Seoul, to the foot of Eiffel Tower in Paris.

"As the Sun is for all, the Moon is for all, rivers are for all, in the same way yoga is for all", he said.

He further appealed to those who are associated with yoga to "do it regularly and those who have not yet adopted yoga to give it a try". "It has become a powerful unifying force", he said.

Ace shuttler Saina Nehwal and wrestler Sakshi Malik were among other members of Indian sports fraternity who also posted yoga day greetings on Twitter.

Modi had earlier participated in yoga celebrations at Rajpath in New Delhi in 2015, the Capitol Complex in Chandigarh in 2016, and the Ramabai Ambedkar Sabha Sthal in Lucknow in 2017.

#07:10 AM: Yoga India's top ambassador: "Yoga is lovely because it is ancient yet modern, it is constant yet evolving".

Modi said yoga presents a ray of hope for future of the world. Past year he participated at an event at the Ramabai Ambedkar Sabha Sthal in Lucknow.

"After only 4-6 months of doing yoga once a week, I was pleased to discover that numerous physical symptoms and pain had greatly subsided or disappeared", says Rola.

"Asana" refers to just the third branch of yoga, which signifies the postures. "Yoga should be a general recommendation as part of the rehabilitation therapy for drug addicts who seek a high by consuming unsafe substances, a high that yoga can give them by enhancing euphoric hormones", she said.

"In a world where non-communicable diseases, stress and lifestyle-related ailments are rising, yoga can play a central role in mitigating these diseases to create a healthy mind and body". People in China are beginning to understand yoga is beneficial to them not only in their daily life but in their work, Indian envoy to China Gautam Bambawale told India Today.

In India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led close to 50,000 people in the city of Dehradun while many union ministers, celebrities and other participants attended similar events across the country.
