Switzerland holds Brazil to 1-1 draw

Neymar Shaqiri Brazil Switzerland 2018

Switzerland kicked off their FIFA World Cup 2018 campaign with an exceptional performance against title favourites Brazil as they came back from a goal down to record a 1-1 draw.

Philippe Coutinho's sensational strike gave the five-time world champions the lead before Steven Zuber equalised early in the second-half as the match ended 1-1.

"It's an unfamiliar situation", he said, while insisting the team "has enough experience to not go under with one defeat".

His assistant, Cleber, rued the team's lack of killer instinct as Brazil enjoyed possession but too often lost the ball in or near the box.

And here's how he reacted on Twitter, in trademark Federer style!

That was the sight of Neymar visibly hobbling through the Rostov Arena mixed zone, after Switzerland subjected him to more fouls than any World Cup player in a single game in 20 years.

Saudi Arabia land safely after plane fire
Flames were seen from the engine as the Russian Airlines Airbus was en route to Rostov where they take on Uruguay on Wednesday. However, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation was quick to release a statement saying that the players are safe.

Liverpool's No.9 was introduced 12 minutes from time at the Rostov Arena as Selecao coach Tite sought a late victor after Steven Zuber had equalised Philippe Coutinho's opener. "I think for us it's a positive because there is not a lot of pressure on us", he said.

When asked whether VAR should have been used to check the legality of the equaliser and of a second-half challenge on Gabriel Jesus by Manuel Akanji, Tite said: "I don't want to make excuses".

"I didn't see the penalty but I don't complain because we have referees outside and inside the field. We knew this game wasn't going to be easy".

"The CBF requires to know from Federation Internationale de Football Association the reason the technology was not used in key incidents during the game", the organisation said in a statement. We didn't deserve to end with a draw.

"We were not actually able to implement it in the first half and that invited Brazil to be risky".

Phillipe Coutinho, who opened the scoring against Switzerland, said after the game that Brazil expect to be targeted by opponents.
