Telegram says Apple stopped its app updates worldwide after Russian ban

Durov has said that Russian Federation accounts for just 7 per cent of the Telegram user base, and claims Apple has nevertheless "restricted" updates for users around the world since mid-April.

Russian Federation officially banned the secure message app Telegram in April, and now it appears the app is facing problems in other regions.

Additionally, App Store users reportedly outspent Google Play store users in 2017. Days ago, the Russian communications regulator Roskomnadzor (RKN) announced that it had made a formal request to Apple to stop distributing the app, and also to stop enabling push notifications for those who already have the app downloaded in Russia. That increase in spending on iOS apps reflects Apple's change in its subscription model in September 2016, when the iPhone maker introduced iOS 10. He also said the block stopped the company from becoming GDPR-compliant prior to the European Union 's May 25 deadline for its strict privacy law.

Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Durov's claims.

A month later, Telegram continues to be available on the App Store.

With Tiger Woods in hunt, Bryson DeChambeau moves into lead at Memorial
Woods was 95 yards out on his third shot and the ball landed just long of the flag before spinning back into the cup. The final round will be threesomes teeing off earlier than usual to account for the forecast.

"We believe we did the only possible thing, preserving the right of our users to privacy in a troubled country", said Durov.

Contrarily to the likes of Facebook and Google, whose business models are based on knowing enough about their users to serve effective advertisements, Apple says it doesn't need to know our most intimate details.

Attention to the lack of upgrades grew after Telegram users complained that some of the app's features ceased working with the release of iOS 11.4 this week.

In April, Telegram was banned in Russia after the company refused to hand over encryption keys to the Russian government.

It's unclear at this time why Apple would restrict app updates to an app that's supposed to protect user privacy. We are continuing our efforts to resolve the situation and will keep you updated.
