Theresa May avoids Commons defeat after Brexit climbdown

His shock departure came as David Davis warned potential Tory rebels that they can not undo the European Union referendum, ahead of a tricky 48 hours in which the Government will try to get its Brexit programme back on track.

Pro-Brexit members of the government want to be able to play the "no deal" card, but the House of Commons, where pro-EU voices are stronger, would nearly certainly reject the idea.

The EU published an explainer of its own backstop proposal in a bid to convince the United Kingdom government of its merits, but Theresa May has said it is not acceptable because it creates a regulatory border between Northern Ireland and the UK.

But Mr Grieve's amendment demands that if there is no agreement with Brussels before the end of November MPs would vote on a motion setting out what should happen next.

"We have not, and will not, agree to the House of Commons binding the government's hands in the negotiations".

"I would hope and am confident that today's debates and tomorrow's debates will take place in an atmosphere of mutual respect in which opinions sincerely held will be robustly articulated", he said.

However, despite backing down, pro-Remain Tories signalled they would not be easily consoled by a compromise offered by ministers.

It is not clear what the rebels may have been offered by the Whips behind closed doors to persuade them to toe the party line.

"The government have conceded that this is necessary and I expect to see a new amendment to cover this situation soon".

In 2015, the leaders of China and Taiwan held historic talks in the city-state - their first in more than 60 years. Kim is hoping Trump will relieve the economic sanctions that have crippled the North Korean economy.

Conservative former minister Anna Soubry said the abuse of MPs who speak out against the government's Brexit policy "simply has to stop".

The Government has managed to fend off a major rebellion after parliament rejected an amendment to bring a "meaningful vote" on the final Brexit deal.

MPs were told that one parliamentarian had to be accompanied to a public meeting by a six armed police officers because of threats over their stance on Brexit.

Soubry reminded the House of Commons of the 48% who were being ignored by the government.

"So, although Robert was trying to be very helpful from the dispatch box in the House of Commons chambers yesterday, it was the Prime Minister's personal assurance that was very important to us and she has given us that and those discussions on how we are going to build on the amendment that has been approved by the House of Commons will start today".

But her concession to parliament means that lawmakers now have more power if she fails to secure a Brexit deal, which may lead to a softer approach to Britain's divorce.

"We will put in front of Parliament the decision for them to vote. after that there will be a process of primary legislation to put the actual details of it in Parliament, so Parliament will actually decide on the application of the detail".

Mr Grieve secured shock concessions from the Prime Minister to avoid an embarrassing defeat for the Government and stated he is certain Tory Rebels will "be able to get what we want" from the Brexit process.
