Trump supports Republican immigration bills in U.S. House: White House

Furor over family separation now a part of House debate over immigration

The confusion engulfed the House chamber during the last vote series of the week and was emblematic of an exercise that members have managed before during tax revisions and health care where Trump famously held a celebration of an Obamacare repeal bill in the White House Rose Garden only to turn around and call the bill "mean" later.

Trump is expected to express his support for two immigration bills the House is planning to vote on next week: a conservative measure by House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte and a compromise measure negotiated by members from a cross section of the conference.

"I'm looking at both of them", Trump said on "Fox and Friends".

Rep. Dina Titus, D-Nev., said the bills do little for Dreamers, "all the while Republicans have turned a blind eye to the children and families being ripped apart at the southern border thanks to the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" policy". "I have to have that".

The White House says President Donald Trump does indeed support an immigration bill crafted by House leadership that he said he wouldn't sign in a morning interview.

But the White House sought to clarify his remarks later in the afternoon.

Many Republicans view the House votes as important election-year statements to voters on where they stand on immigration.

But later, the White House walked back that rejection, saying the president was "confused" and would sign the bill.

The proposed House bills are set for votes next week. Under the bill, jurisdictions that decline to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement could be held liable for failing to detain people in the US illegally for deportation proceedings.

The lack of clarity led GOP leaders to put their plans for the bill on hold.

Cuper added: "He is a player who in the last 25 metres has enormous skill and enormous options. He is in the top 10 for me, there is no shadow of doubt about it", he said.

Administration officials said they do not like the family separations either - calling it the result of legal loopholes - but insist migrants who arrive illegally simply won't be released or loosely kept track of. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed Friday that almost 2,000 children have been separated from their parents between April 19 and May 31. Immigrant advocates have denounced those centers as harsh and sometimes risky.

Almost 2,000 children were separated from their families over a six-week period in April and May after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the new "zero-tolerance" policy that refers all cases of illegal entry for criminal prosecution.

"I hate the children being taken away", he said.

"The Democrats have to change their law, that's their law", he repeated, even when reporters told him that was untrue.

Until the policy was announced in the spring, such families were usually referred for civil deportation proceedings, not requiring separation. Earlier this year, Trump bade farewell to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, national security adviser H.R. McMaster and top economic aide Gary Cohn, among others. Former White House political strategist Steve Bannon warned of impending political catastrophe for Republicans if they advance the moderate bill. Conservatives have typically denounced such expansive readings of the due process clause's reach.

"President Trump has to say my priority is the wall and then work with us on getting a bill that gets his wall and other things", Ros-Lehtinen said.

It would include a legal fix for the so-called Dreamers, young people who came to this country illegally as children. Despite the backlash, the president has defended the policy, which went into effect in May. His efforts to cut funding have been blocked by the courts.

The bill makes it easier for authorities to deport those here illegally, rather than allowing some to be released under certain circumstances.

"What we saw here today was heartbreaking", Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. of New Jersey said after he emerged from the ICE facility in his state.

Protesters gathered in more than a dozen states - including California, Texas, Michigan and NY - on Thursday to bring attention to what organizers say is the administration's "cruel and inhumane treatment of immigrants and asylum seekers".
