Later it turned out that he managed to eject and was rescued by the Japanese self-defense forces.

Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said the government had "received information that a crew member of the F-15 jet, which is stationed at Kadena Air Base, ejected above the sea some 50 miles (80 km) south of" the city of Naha, The Japan Times reported. Japan's public broadcaster NHK said he had a broken leg.

"We have been notified that the pilot is in serious condition".

Another US F-15 military plane crashed in front of Okinawa in May 2013.

Col. Richard Tanner, 18th Wing vice commander, thanked the Naha-based rescue squadron for its quick response.

The latest crash adds to a slew of other accidents involving USA military aircraft in recent years, which have fanned safety concerns and local opposition to the military bases there.

Kadena is the largest USA military base in Japan, and hosts around 47,000 American troops under a decades-long security alliance.

A US Air Force F-15 is seen in 2009 taking off at Kadena U.S. Air Force Base on Japan's southwestern island of Okinawa.

"We've asked the USA side to provide information, strengthen safety control and take preventive measures", Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters Monday morning.

The US has reportedly lost six aircraft since the beginning of the year in non-combat training accidents, including several fatalities.

"I will ask for detailed reports about why it happened", he added.

"If the problems remain unresolved and another crash occurs, people may become used to it and think that this is how things stand in Okinawa Prefecture", said Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga.

The heavy USA military presence in Okinawa has been the source of friction with the local government and some residents.

Earlier it was reported that in the area of the island of Okinawa fell into the sea the American fighter F-15.
