US net neutrality rules expire, court battle looms

Net neutrality ends this Monday June 11th motion to keep it alive could die in the House

Now that the repeal is in effect, ISPs "have the green light to begin degrading our access to the internet", said former FCC commissioner and Common Cause special adviser Michael Copps.

In an editorial over at CNET, Pai offers up the equivalent of a "greatest hits" of all of his misleading statements so far, including claims that killing the popular consumer protections will somehow result in more transparency, faster broadband speeds, better broadband deployment, and lower prices.

The millions of people who won net neutrality three years ago aren't going away now. Many ISPs say they are waiting to see what happens with the proposed Net Neutrality rules. The net neutrality protections prohibited internet providers from favoring or blocking access to particular products or websites.

That means that internet providers like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon will be able to block, throttle and otherwise interfere with online content without any real legal consequences.

How could the net neutrality repeal affect you?

Beginning Monday, however, the US government no longer explicitly prohibits those practices.

Internet providers could choose to prioritize their own content and services over those of rivals. Violations of their promises - or behaviors that threaten competition or consumers - now fall under the watch of the Federal Trade Commission, not the telecom-focused FCC.

Two states, OR and Washington, have passed net neutrality laws and 29 states are considering legislation, which could lead to new legal battles over Internet laws. Pai's children even faced harassment over the repeal. "They now have nearly free reign over what content their subscribers will have access to", he wrote.

Yet, some fear it's also possible internet providers will one day effectively charge customers more to access services like Netflix that are now included as part of your monthly bill.

Merkel-Trump photos reveal power play at tense G7
To many social media users, the picture was worth more than "a thousand words" while several others had a deeper interpretation of the photograph.

Q. What's net neutrality, again? Frank Pallone, N.J., the top Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said in an interview. Eventually, these extra charges could be passed along to the public.

Over 20 states have joined the fight by banning together in a lawsuit to reverse the net neutrality repeal.

"That is not the open internet we know today and rely on to consume and create".

A group of 22 states have sued the FCC over the repeal.

"It's patently illegal for the states to make their own internet policy", Roslyn Layton, a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute who served on President Trump's transition team for the FCC, told CNNMoney last month.

In California, lawmakers hope a proposal making its way through the legislature could force the U.S. Congress to settle the issue with a long-elusive federal standard.

Net neutrality was repealed previous year under an order called the "Restoring Internet Freedom" order.

At the FCC, Pai said the agency is "keeping all options on the table".

"Consumers won't notice the shift at first, but over time the internet will become unrecognizable", she said.
