US President Donald Trump digs in heels on disturbing immigration policy

America Better Than This: Texas Doctor On Shelter For Migrant Children

After Trump initially said last week he wouldn't support Ryan's compromise bill, the White House later said the president would sign it. There were boos - a rarity for Trump in a room where he is largely loved.

He has cast blame for the family separations on Democrats, although his fellow Republicans control both chambers in Congress and his own administration implemented the current policy of strict adherence to immigration laws.

GOP senators including Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Jeff Flake of Arizona and Susan Collins of ME also said they've been discussing family separation legislation.

The Republican calls for a policy rethink follow the release of an audio recording appearing to capture the desperation and suffering of young migrant children separated from their mothers and fathers at the United States border.

Rep. Kay Granger of Fort Worth released a statement responding to residents in her district who have raised concerns.

Carney, a Democrat, called the policy "inhumane" and said Congress and President Trump need to "fix the mess that our immigration system has become". An NBC reporter said on Twitter that the culprit was a congressional intern. Sanford, a longtime conservative who has attacked Trump for not telling the truth and not espousing conservative principles, has grated on Trump.

"I haven't been sleeping because of what's going on", another woman said through tears at the town hall. "The tragedy of the Trump presidency is that he thinks it's about him".

"But we really have to do something that can get to 218 votes and some of the people who are in that negotiation did not support their request", Mr. Goodlatte said.

Sanford said he was heartened that members in the room booed the president and said it was a "biased, demeaning and pejorative comment".

"I don't want children taken away from parents", he told a gathering of small business owners, before adding: "When you prosecute the parents for coming in illegally, which should happen, you have to take the children away".

The administration could end the policy at any time. The administration has the power to rescind this policy.

Trump, who limited his remarks to about 20 minutes, veered from his script to the usual potpourri of topics, according to attendees. He began the meeting by citing the pictures of children in cages along the Mexican border and said it was a "dangerous issue" for the GOP, two attendees said, calling the pictures "bad for us".

But he soon veered into his prowess in negotiating fighter jet contracts, even ticking off specific planes such as the F-35, what he sees as a vast imbalance on trade and the administration's tax cuts.

Republican House leaders, increasingly fearful of voter reaction in November, met with Trump for about an hour at the Capitol to try to work out some resolution.

Tuesday's huddle between Trump and Republican lawmakers will be closely watched, in part to see whether any of them dare to directly confront the president. Under the Obama administration, such families were usually referred for civil deportation proceedings, not requiring separation. He said it would damage his relationship and attacked the news media for their criticisms of the North Korean leader, who has engineered the killings of family members and starved his people.

He bragged about his poll numbers at one point, two attendees said. "Mexico does nothing for us", charged Trump.

There have been protests outside many detention centres and even after a growing national outrage, the U.S. president is unapologetic and has declared that the country will not be a "migrant camp". The children are often placed at the facility without any adults they know.

The White House did not respond to questions about the letter.

But Trump himself put that bill in doubt.
