USA, Canada and Mexico to host football World Cup 2026

US, Mexico and Canada to host 2026 World Cup as Morocco lose out

India had officially qualified for a FIFA World Cup back in 1950, which was held in Brazil.

Delegates had been faced with a clear choice - the joint North American bid boasts modern, established stadiums and well-developed transport links underpinned by Mexican football fervour.

Morocco, on the other hand, promised a "European" World Cup in Africa, playing on the north African nation's proximity to Europe.

Which cities would be hosting the 2026 World Cup?

.

Team Canada player and Whitecaps forward Alphonso Davies shares his story of being welcomed with open arms by Canadians and explains that he knows the people of North America will do the same for the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ if the United Bid wins the vote.

The North American bid was in better shape to host the World Cup.

CONCACAF, the governing body for soccer in North America, Central America and the Caribbean, has seven slots in the World Cup.

Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo, reporting from NY, said: "While the official name of the bid is United 2026, the three potential host nations are right now anything but united".

A total of 80 games will be played with 60 planned in the United States and 10 each in Canada and Mexico with the final played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, home to National Football League teams New York Giants and New York Jets.

Canada will host men's World Cup matches for the first time, while Mexico gets its first taste of the event since staging the entire event in 1986. Despite Africa appearing to act as a unified bloc in the build-up to the election, 11 African nations wound up voting for the United Bid, according to the results published by Federation Internationale de Football Association. Hosting rights for previous World Cups had been awarded by what was then a 24-person FIFA Executive Committee. It was all for wearing that jersey, to represent my country and get us to a World Cup.

Other cities on the list are Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Edmonton, Guadalajara, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Monterrey, Montreal, Nashville, New York/NewJersey, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Toronto and Washington, DC. The plan features three matches on opening day in three countries for the first time. The 2026 tournament will be the first hosted by multiple countries since the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

The United Bid is expected to generate more than $14 billion in revenue and $11 billion in profits for FIFA, which will be shared with the 211 FIFA Member Associations, helping further develop and expand the game of football across the globe.

Morocco has been deemed "high risk" in the above factors - including transport, accommodations and stadiums - leading the United States to outscore them ahead of the June 13 bid.

The evaluation report also offers a "technical scoring" of the two bids, with Morocco getting 274.9 out of 500, compared to the United bid's 402.8 total.
