Utah's most misspelled word right now is pretty ugly

It has seven letters, its comes from Yiddish and it was a question at the Scripps National Spelling Bee semifinals this week in Maryland.

A 12-year-old Davie girl has spelled her way into the finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee Thursday, one of 16 student finalists in a quest that began at the start of the school year with 11 million vying to make it to the national competition.

"I'm feeling good", Rohan said.

Out of 516 spellers on Tuesday, 454 spelled correctly and advanced to the third round Wednesday.

At February's bee in St. John's, Mattie said she was looking forward to the Scrips Bee and planned to study the dictionary every night in preparation. The group is made up of nine girls and seven boys.

"I can tell my mom is pretty overwhelmed because this is my second time in the finals", said Erin Howard, 13, from Huntsville, Alabama. More than 500 spellers competed this year - a record number for the event. "There are pretty much no words to describe it", she added.

The victor of the spelling bee will receive more than $40,000 in prize money and eternal bragging rights.
