Winston Peters says it's a 'happy day' for Jacinda Ardern

Jacinda Ardern's last week of work as PM ahead of taking leave was conducted from Auckland within driving distance

New Zealand's prime minister has arrived at the hospital to have her first child.

Winston Peters, the deputy prime minister, is now acting prime minister.

Ms Ardern took office as New Zealand's third female prime minister past year and announced in January she was expecting a baby with her partner, television fishing show presenter Clarke Gayford.

Her due date was Sunday 17 June.

The pregnancy news late past year came as a surprise to Ms Ardern, who then had to simultaneously deal with both intense negotiations to form a government and morning sickness.

Mr Peters said he was advised this morning that the prime minister had been admitted to hospital. Mr Peters carried out some of the prime minister's Wellington-based duties this week, chairing Cabinet and hosted Ms Ardern's weekly post-cabinet media conference.

The PM's office says there will be no further formal announcements from the Prime Minister's office till Ardern and Gayford announce the birth of their baby.

Jacinda Ardern's office on Thursday morning confirmed she had turned the reigns over to her deputy after arriving at Auckland Hospital.

Just a handful of elected leaders worldwide have given birth while in office, notably Benazir Bhutto who had her son in 1990 while Prime Minister of Pakistan.

The New York Times reports Ms Ardern's pregnancy has prompted a national conversation about working mothers.
