She maintained that if the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation could be sustained, it would go a long way of bringing succour to carriers of sickle cell disease, just as she commended the recent agreement between the Federal Ministry of Health and May & Baker for the production, development of regulatory guidelines for the assessment and registration of phytomedicines in Nigeria. "They are not in huge numbers like cancer or diabetes, but if it's one suffering, we need to pay attention to that and find ways to help that patient and their family", said Lois Williams, president of the Sickle Cell Association.

Sickle Cell Foundation co-ordinator Martin Oracha said the disease affects many school-going children who do not know how to manage it, leading to absenteeism or dropping out of school.

The event, the organisers said is aimed at creating awareness about sickle cell disorder, its prevention and management for senior secondary school students and residents of the territory.

June 19th has been designated as the World Day of Sickle Cell Disease by the United Nations.

Dr Surekha Devi A, says, "Sickle cells are sticky and block blood flow in vessels, which not only puts patients at risk of stroke, it causes intense pain".

He added that the Premier's interest and encouragement of blood donation campaigns, coupled with laws and social awareness, has contributed to reducing the number of sickle cell patients and increasing blood stocks in Bahrain. It remains a major killer of infants and children in the developing world, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where an estimated 50-90 percent of infants born with SCD will die before their fifth birthday.

Iwalokun said: "Government needed to give priority in the national health strategic plan to sickle cell management and also support it with a policy". Now about 25,000 babies are born, with sickle cell disease every year.

"It is a drug that every sickle cell patient have to take in order to improve the quality of their lives". Early diagnosis and treatment saves lives. However, this is still a challenge across the country because the numbers of specialized sickle cell clinics is still low.

Chairman of the NGO, Ejidike Ugochukwu, made the pledge Tuesday in his welcome remarks during the inauguration of the NGO and book launch titled: "Unveiling Sickle Cell Anaemia", held at Orchid Hotel, Asaba. As parents, it's our responsibility to request a sickle cell test when our babies have been born.
