Amazon’s Prime Day Gets Off To Less Than ‘Epic’ Start

Amazon Prime Day 2018: Best deals so far including TVs, Fitbit and Echo Show

Prime Day - Amazon's annual deals bonanza - is into its second day, and you probably think you're on top of all the deals worth knowing on the site.

More customers in India joined the Prime membership program in the week leading up to Prime Day than in any other week before, with more than 35% of new members living in tier 2-3 towns.

"Amazon is a massive behemoth - it will take more than a strike in Spain to rattle its cage", said Peter Horst, founder of marketing consulting firm CMO. It kicked off at noon Pacific time today, and lasts for 36 hours - promising more than one million deals exclusively for Prime members.

Amazon said its Prime Video and Prime Music offerings were also widely consumed during the sale, stating that the week leading up to Prime Day had the highest number of streamers ever.

In a wave of strikes, thousands of Amazon workers in Germany will join their counterparts in Spain and Poland to demand better working conditions from the USA tech giant on a day that also marks a major sales promotion, Amazon's Prime Day, which is an annual event where the company offers discounts on many products.

The outage is likely due to the huge customer response to Prime Day, where Amazon promises Black Friday-like discounts in the middle of July.

Prime Day's hype also means that consumers are adjusting their shopping habits accordingly. Amazon.com and respectively Amazon Web Services should be able to handle the traffic, and while new countries were added this year, one would think that the company did some stress testing in advance.

Within minutes of the sale opening on July 16th, Amazon's website crashed, with online shoppers unable to access the sales or make purchases for the first few hours.

This year's Prime Day may be remembered for the dogs, not the deals.

Amazon said small and medium-sized businesses had sold more than $1 billion in since Monday, when the event started. "The goal of #PrimeDayofAction is to raise awareness about the harmful practices of the nations largest online retailer and to ask: is there anything Amazon wont do for a dollar?"

When is Amazon Prime Day 2018?

The Echo Dot and Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote were the two best selling items, according to Amazon.

The company gave no details on the impact of technical glitches on the day.

For the first time, members in Australia, Singapore, the Netherlands and Luxembourg participated in Prime Day. The "Dogs of Amazon" photos were so popular that #DogsofAmazon began trending on Twitter - turning what could have been a Prime Day nightmare into a PR win for the company.
