Amlo win to usher in new era in Mexico

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is surrounded by members of the media after casting his ballot in Mexico City on Sunday

Lopez Obrador has said he will root out corruption and grant amnesties to certain criminals amid an intense wave of violence in Mexico.

The survey by Consulta Mitofsky said Lopez Obrador had a 16 to 26 percent lead over his nearest rival, conservative Ricardo Anaya.

Supporters of Lopez-Obrador celebrated wildly in Mexico City.

It is a major shift in Mexican politics: the PRI and PAN have governed for almost a century, and Lopez Obrador will be the country's first leftist president in recent history when he takes office on 1 December. Top of the agenda will be free trade negotiations and reassessing the deal to build a new Mexico City airport. We have a border of more than 3,000 kilometres, more than 12 million Mexicans live in the United States. Rivals have warned he could set the country back with his interventionist economic policy.

Hundreds of Mexicans living in California drove for hours on Sunday to vote south of the border for Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador as president, persuaded by his pledges to stand up to U.S President Donald Trump and end graft and violence at home.

The results make Obrador Mexico's first presidential candidate to receive more than 50 per cent of the vote since the PRI lost its dominant position in the last century.

Furious at spiraling corruption and violence, Mexican voters unleashed a political quake Sunday by electing a leftist firebrand as president and giving him a broad mandate to overthrow the political establishment and govern for the poor.

Mr Lopez Obrador appears well liked by his people.

The election was a crushing defeat for the ruling centrist Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which governed Mexico from 1929-2000 continually and again from 2012.

In 79 regular season games with the Thunder past year , George averaged 21.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. LA will still be there in three or four years, if he wants to still play there.

US President Donald Trump tweeted his congratulations Sunday night.

Lopez Obrador calls them both part of the same "mafia of power", a message that resonated with many people - even if he has been vague on what the change he promises will look like.

Lopez Obrador's coalition will have a majority in the lower house, and possibly in the Senate as well, according to the firm's exit polls - a coup for a party contesting its first national elections.

Exit polls in Mexico are predicting clear victories for allies of leftist presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in races for four statehouses plus the capital.

Pena Nieto tells reporters at the polling station that his administration will be "absolutely respectful and support the authorities that are elected".

Anaya tried to harness the youth vote with an emphasis on technology and new ideas, but he divided his own conservative party to take its candidacy and there were doubts his new allies in the leftist Democratic Revolution Party would turn out for someone from the other end of the ideological spectrum.

The head of Mexico's electoral institute says voting across the country has been proceeding "peacefully, without major incidents".

Later in the day, a second member of a political party was killed as well.

"We demand the state guarantee the security of this electoral process", the PRI said in a statement. "Now that he has won, he can not fail this new generation that believes in him", said Mariano Bartolini, a 29-year-old lawyer who voted for Lopez Obrador in the northwestern city of Rosarito, near Tijuana.

Many voters say they are sick of both the PRI and the PAN, the parties that have governed Mexico for almost a century.
