An Indiana church created this controversial display as a protest against Trump

Church protests Trump’s immigration policy puts the Holy Family behind bars. More

A church in Indianapolis has put up a display that shows the statues of Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus in a cage to protest the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy.

Sitting in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, on the lawn where Christ Church Cathedral erects its Nativity scene every year, is the holy family.

Christ Church Cathedral in Indianapolis, Indiana, posted a picture of the display meant to protest the separation and detention of migrant families by the department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement under Trump.

The Rev. Lee Curtis, who came up with the idea for the demonstration, said the Biblical trio was a family of refugees seeking asylum in Egypt after Jesus' birth. The church has taken a strong position against the separation of families at the US border.

"This is an easy one for us", said Carlsen, a member of the Faith in IN group that advocates for immigrants. "The people in detention centers are only trying to make a better life for their children and a secure and safe place for their families". "Our religious images are supposed to remind us where".

"On our lawn tonight we placed The Holy Family...in #ICE detention", the church tweeted Wednesday morning.

"The fact that it's controversial isn't because I want to be controversial", Steve Carlson, the church's dean, said.

"This symbol is something that speaks to every one of us at our most basic level, because of who we are as a church and as Christians", he told CNN.

He says the display has already made a strong visual impact and it will stay up for as long as they feel needed. "My greatest hope is that those in power, those who could end this today, will say 'We are not going to treat people coming into our country this way, '" the priest says. "I'm sure there will be differences of opinion in my congregation because we're a good, healthy community".
