Anti-Trump FBI lawyer snubs congressional subpoena

Peter Strzok and Lisa Page

Page, who has been under fire for exchanging anti-Trump text messages with Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok during the 2016 presidential election, was subpoenaed by House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, according to reports.

Congressional investigators were set for a private interview with Page on Wednesday, but her attorney said Tuesday she did not have time to prepare and would not appear.

"It appears that Lisa Page has something to hide", he said in a statement. "I received a message from the Department of Justice after 11 p.m. last night that they have finally granted her request to review the relevant documents".

Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., a member of the Oversight Committee, said Page's action was "indefensible". She and Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok, who is set to testify publicly before the committees Thursday, exchanged disparaging text messages about then-candidate Donald Trump throughout the 2016 campaign. Page and Strzok both worked on the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails and later special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

The Judiciary committee issued a subpoena Saturday for Page to appear Wednesday, according to Jeffress.

"She's known for about seven months", said Goodlatte, a Republican from Virginia.

Page was schedule to testify before Congress Wednesday.

It's unclear if GOP lawmakers will actually hold a contempt vote if Page continues to defy the subpoena.

The Judiciary Committee also held a contentious hearing June 28 with FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Chu Ready to Adapt Thai Rescue Story
The boys have so far only been allowed to see their parents through the glass of a quarantined room, due to the risk of infection. The boys would have to stay in the hospital for up to 10 days, hospital director Chaiwetch Thanapaisal told the news conference.

"Lisa Page is a key witness, and it is critical that she come before our committees to answer questions as part of our investigation", Goodlatte added.

Mr. Strzok is scheduled to testify Wednesday before both committees.

The president has also made frequent references to the fact that Page and Strzok were having an affair, which is noted in the Justice Department report.

"Wow, but is anybody really surprised!"

Republican lawmakers have seized on a text in which Mr. Strzok discusses "an insurance policy" against the president and another in which he vowed to stop Mr. Trump from becoming president as evidence the Mueller investigation is biased. Trump said of the decision.

The DOJ watchdog reported that it could not determine whether Strzok's decision not to promptly examine the Weiner laptop was untainted by his political bias. "This is an example of a congressional committee trying to find a "gotcha moment" instead of legitimately investigating Justice Department policies and practices".

House Republicans have been nevertheless aggressively pushing for interviews - including by serving Strzok with a subpoena for public testimony Thursday after declining to release a transcript of his closed-door testimony last month as his lawyer and Democrats demanded.

Federal Bureau of Investigation director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein have rejected suggestions of bias against Trump, and have assured Congress that Mueller is conducting his probe appropriately.
