Belgium 3 Japan 2

Belgium's Eden Hazard Romelu Lukaku and Kevin de Bruyne

Nacer Chadli scored with the last kick of the game as Belgium came from 2-0 down to beat Japan 3-2 in Rostov and set up a World Cup quarter-final against Brazil.

Belgium is the first team to overturn a two-goal deficit in a World Cup knockout match since West Germany beat England in extra time at the 1970 tournament.

Run ragged at times by the skilful and determined Samurai Blue, who are 58 places behind them at 61st in FIFA's world rankings, the Red Devils will look hard at their defensive frailties and difficulties in turning pressure into goals before they face Brazil in the quarter-final in just four days.

The distraught Japanese, who went 2-0 up with goals by Genki Haraguchi and Takashi Inui early in the second half, fell to the turf after Chadli poked the ball home from Thomas Meunier's cross four minutes into added time at the Rostov Arena on Monday.

Their fortunes changed after that as Vertonghen scored a looping header to get them back into the game.

Relieved Belgium manager Roberto Martinez saluted his side's resolve.

"No negatives today, it was about getting through", Martinez insisted, offering the highest of praise for Japan's skill and tactics.

"For the next four years, it's very important for our young talented players to get experience", Bob Browaeys, who has been national youth coach for almost 20 years, told Reuters, arguing that past champions have been slow to refresh the first team.

This was Belgium's toughest test under Martinez so far, a Japan side who pushed them to the very edge.

"In the World Cup you want to be flawless - but it's about getting through, it's about winning", said the Spaniard, who was hired after a side packed with English Premier League talent collapsed against Wales in the Euro 2016 quarter-final.

Trump Says He Will Announce Supreme Court Pick on July 9
Among the candidates he's considering are two women, and he told reporters that he might meet with candidates over a golf weekend. Trump himself described Supreme Court nominee selection as the most important decision he can make "outside of war and peace".

A long-range shot from Eden Hazard was Belgium's brightest chance in the first 45 minutes as Japan kept close tabs on Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku.

Hardly tested in the first half but was well beaten by both of Japan's goals.

Japan took the lead when they won possession deep in their own half.

This devil-may-care attitude arguably led to their downfall as, after Honda's fizzing 35-yard freekick was saved by Thibaut Courtois, the Belgium goalkeeper gobbled up the resultant corner and initiated a blistering counterattack which led to Nacer Chadli netting a 94th-minute victor.

Falling behind rattled the Belgians as Hazard clattered the post moments later.

With just over 20 minutes left in the game, it looked as if the very talented Belgians would be sent home by a tenacious Japan side they had been expected to dispatch easily.

"You get pushed in games, you have to congratulate Japan, they were the ideal game, they were so solid, they frustrated us".

Until Verthongen's goal, Belgium had failed to demonstrate the mental resilience demanded by this sort of match at a World Cup.

Martinez then played a masterstroke by bringing on Marouane Fellaini and Chadli.

Brazil has moved through to the quarter-finals with Neymar scoring his side's opening goal and having an assist for the second but it was his time-wasting that drew the ire of Osorio. Kevin de Bruyne provided the defence-splitting pass, Thomas Meunier crossed for Romelu Lukaku, who had the enormous presence of mind to dummy it to an advancing and un-tracked Nacer Chadli to finish the job and with it, the fightback to send Japan to their knees.
