Canada Hits US With $12.6 Billion In Retaliatory Tariffs

U.S. President Donald Trump approaches Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as he arrives at the G7 Summit in Charlevoix Quebec Canada

Trump has also tried to pressure Canada and Mexico into agreeing to rewrite the 24-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement to shift more auto production and investment to the United States.

Asked in an interview on Fox News "you can't do Nafta before the midterms", Trump responded, "I want to wait until after the election".

Lopez Obrador told the Televisa network Monday that he will respect the current team of negotiators, and let them continue representing Mexico until he takes office December 1, noting that he wants to have information on what's being discussed and "to help as much as we can".

Trump, however, has said he wants to wait until after November's USA congressional midterms before committing to a new agreement.

The Canadian government has announced it is imposing tariffs on United States exports worth $16.6 billion in Canadian dollars or $12.5 billion in USA dollars.

Trump enraged Canada and other USA allies by declaring imported steel and aluminium a threat to America's national security.

Trudeau was speaking on the front steps of Highbury Canco with CEO Sam Diab.

Some have already launched retaliatory measures and filed legal challenges with the World Trade Organization.

Later in the day in Regina, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said Canada's tariffs were created to offer a clear message that the Trump administration's trade action against Canada is "illegal and absurd" and that Canada is responding, dollar-for-dollar, in retaliation.

Tens of millions of dollars worth of tariffs went into effect over the weekend, as a trade war between the USA and Canada heats up. "This touches families and lives and homes and communities".

Trump railed against his trading partners during the meeting, according to sources, and withdrew his support for a joint communique after leaving the summit, angering and bewildering some of Washington's closest allies.

Angela Egan said she feels Trump is trying to "bully" Canada into submission.

Many U.S. manufacturers have decried the tariffs.

"I think we'll get through this".

Trudeau later spoke with Lopez Obrador on Monday, wherein they discussed their mutual trade interests and their "shared priority of updating the North American Free Trade Agreement for the betterment of their peoples", said a readout of the conversation issued Monday.

"Happy Canada Day, Dawson City", he shouted to his cheering audience. Do you know what happened?
