Chelsea sack Conte with Sarri set to take over

Maurizio Sarri

The Italian had two contrasting campaigns at the helm and has now vacated his post.

Owner Roman Abramovich has risked paying Conte his full £9million compensation bill with the Italian ready to take a year out if no big jobs become available.

Shortly after reports emerged of Conte's sacking, some Chelsea fans on Twitter cheered the decision after a year of unhappiness at Stamford Bridge. They eventually stuttered to a fifth-placed finish in the league, which has led to Conte's departure even though he did clinch the FA Cup title.

Its been months in the making but it appears that Chelsea are finally on the cusp of announcing Maurizio Sarri as their new manager.

Conte took training at Chelsea on Thursday morning, but was then sacked along with his coaching staff. He did win the FA Cup last season, but he failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Given that we are now just over four weeks away from the start of the new Premier League season, it looks like a risk for Chelsea to leave it this late to change their manager, but Conte didn't look like he really wanted at times last season.

Chelsea sacked Conte and nearly his entire staff at the club's Cobham training ground after the Italian took a morning session yesterday, with Sarri now on the brink of taking over.

Sarri, 59, guided Napoli to second place in Serie A in back-to-back seasons. He was eventually replaced by Carlo Ancelotti on May 23 after speculation that Sarri's buyout clause would be activated by another club.

Unless a private agreement can be struck or Chelsea and Conte embark on a bitter legal battle, the Blues will have to pay the 48-year-old for the final year of his contract that was only improved on July 18 last year.

Jorginho is unlikely to be the only new arrival at Stamford Bridge and another of Sarri's former players at Napoli has been linked: Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain.

Sarri is expected to be in charge of Chelsea's pre-season training camp in Australia.

Jorginho was a crucial part of that system in the heart of the midfield.
