Convicted son-in-law of Nawaz Sharif held in Rawalpindi

Pak Authorities Arrest Nawaz Sharif's Son-In-Law Over Corruption Charges

Ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz will be arrested on their arrival at any airport in Pakistan as they have been convicted in a corruption case, a senior minister said on Monday.

The duo's planned surrender to law, insiders said, is the last election card to be used by Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam. Her husband, Mohammad Safdar, was handed one year after being found guilty of abetment.

She said a consultation was under way over the decision and that their lawyers are looking at the matter from all legal angles.

Sharif's son-in-law Capt (retd.) M Safdar who has been given one-year jail term for not cooperating with NAB, and aiding and abetting Sharif and Maryam has been arrested and sent to Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi.

Both Nawaz Sharif and his daughter are now in London to look after Mr Sharif's wife, Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, who is suffering from throat cancer and has been on ventilator since June 14 after a cardiac arrest.

NAB officials took Safdar into custody after he appeared at a party rally in Rawalpindi.

With regards to Nawaz's return, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hamza Shehbaz has called on workers to reach Islamabad when the PML-N supremo returns to the country.

NAB teams are expected to be waiting at the airport to arrest both father and daughter as soon as they land, either in Lahore or Islamabad.

Sharif, 67, was removed as prime minister and disqualified from politics for life by the Supreme Court in 2017 over undeclared assets.

She has accused the military establishment and judiciary of targeting the Sharif family in a series of tweets since the verdict, Pakistan's first historic corruption conviction of a top politician.

The NAB has already declared that Mr Sharif and Maryam will be arrested upon their arrival at any airport of the country. Titled "Road to New Pakistan", the manifesto is similar to other ambitious past pledges by political parties that ended up unable to make good on them.
