Croatia bests Denmark in shootout to reach World Cup quarter-finals

Luka Modric hails

Wow. Wow. Wow. The 2018 World Cup keeps delivering classics and we are in for another cracking one after the grueling Spain vs Russian Federation epic show which saw the 2010 World Cup winners dumped out by the host nation.

In-form Croatia will be hot favourites against Denmark, who have looked lacklustre in the group stages, when the two sides clash in the Round of 16 of the World Cup on Sunday.

But Croatia won the shootout 3-2 after Danijel Subasic saved three spot-kicks.

The Croatia v Denmark kick-off time is set for 7pm BST, which is 9pm local time in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, where the game is being played.

A dramatic start saw both sides find the net in the opening four minutes, with Mathias Jorgensen bundling the ball over the line for Denmark after just 57 seconds.

Six of Croatia's seven goals at this year's World Cup have been scored in the second half.

Ten minutes from the end, Josip Pivaric came on for Ivan Strinic as Croatia made a change at left-back, and he was quickly into the action with a cross that Perisic headed over.

Croatia came into the 2018 FIFA World Cup as dark horses and have firmly lived up to the billing.

As far as fans takeover goes, this is about as good as it gets.

Zlatko Dalic's team won all of their games on the way to running away with Group G but are tasked with overcoming a solid Denmark side, unbeaten thus far in Russian Federation. Short pass to Eriksen, who attempts a shot from the distance but hits the ball directly to a Croatian player.

GOAL! Denmark take the lead in the first minute!

In three minutes of added time, Rakitic thumped a drive wide from the edge of the box, Braithwaite having time to send a strike of his own wide before the referee's whistle confirmed extra time. Denmark has scored only two goals in its last three games.

Instead the player who created most chances was Knudsen with his long throws.

The Tottenham playmakers past and present hold down important roles for their national sides, with Modric outstanding for Croatia so far at Russian Federation 2018 and Eriksen Denmark's main attacking threat.

Led by Real Madrid's midfield lynchpin Luka Modric, Croatia also defeated Nigeria and Iceland to top Group D. The pre-quarter-final will be played at the same venue where the Croats thumped Argentina.

Pione Sisto could be a key player for Denmark in Nizhny Novgorod.
