Egypt sarcophagus tomb OPENED despite risk of DEADLY black magic curse

Three skeletons inside a 2,000 year old sarcophagus

Mustafa Waziri of Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities told local media the team assigned to crack open the gargantuan tomb managed to pry the 2000-year-old lid just 5cm off the box before being overpowered by the rancid odour of its contents.

The giant solid-black granite tomb was discovered two weeks ago by archeologists, during a dig in the coastal city of Alexandria - a possible site where Alexander the Great could be buried.

To put minds at ease, Secretary-General of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Waziri said cold water was poured over the sarcophagus in a ritual performed to banish evil spirits from such discoveries.

The unmarked tomb in Alexandria did not likely belong to any other notable ruler in the Ptolemaic period (332 BC-30 BC) associated with Alexander the Great, or the subsequent Roman era, Waziri said.

After opening the 30-ton (27,000 kg) coffin, the experts have found three decomposed bodies that were lying in a pool of sewage water inside the stone coffin.

"We've opened it and, thank God, the world has not fallen into darkness, said Waziri".

He said: "We found the bones of three people, in what looks like a family burial".

The sarcophagus, nearly three metres across and two metres high, is believed to date from the early Ptolemaic period, which began following the death of Alexander in 323BC. They also think one skull was possibly struck by an arrow, while the sewage is believed to have leaked in, the ministry added.

The skeletons will be studied further at a restoration museum, while the sarcophagus itself will preserved for historical purposes.

Legends abounded about the sarcophagus, which was first found over 16 feet below ground by construction workers in a residential area of Alexandria earlier this month.

Now experts will prise open the ancient sarcophagus in the hope new secrets will be uncovered.

Despite warnings of an ancient curse to those who would open the 2,000-year-old sarcophagus, archaeologists went ahead on Wednesday, enlisting the help of Egyptian military engineers.
