England's 1996 soccer anthem back on charts, Lifestyle News & Top Stories

GETTYSkinner and Baddiel sang the 1996 England anthem with the Lightning Seeds

Marvin Humes, presenter of The Official Vodafone Big Top 40, said: 'What an incredible day!

The Three Lions was originally released for the European Championships in 1996 when it topped the charts.

Pedantic? Sure, but hey, that's what it's called, and as England march on through a fairly unchallenging World Cup path to glory, it's a touch irritating seeing it misused en masse.

Excitement reached fever pitch among a number of famous football fans, with the cast of West End musical Hamilton changing one of their songs to sing Three Lions.

They changed the lyrics to reflect the England squad as it was at the time, and the new version was just as popular.

"I don't know what you're saying in the dressing room to the players, but whatever you're saying, it's working". I actually watched England win the World Cup, I actually watched it. What's extraordinary, although perhaps unsurprising, is that the song continues to chart - once every four years like clockwork, as England's football-winning ambitions remain as intimately tied to the single as the yuletide holidays do to Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas".

"We got out we download and we stream "Three Lions", and we get it to Number 1".

Officialcharts.com said the song, performed by comedians Frank Skinner and David Baddiel and the Lightning Seeds, had shot up from 24 to number 1 at the halfway stage on Monday's chart update.

"Confident, professional and a team that are playing for each other, playing for the manager and playing for our country..."

Football's coming home! There is no doubt about it, as these infectious movie and TV inspired Wold Cup mash-ups prove. Fair, but we mustn't forget the line which follows: "I know that was then / but it could be again".
