Family warns of ‘Hot Water Challenge’ danger after teen suffers severe burns

Kyland Clark 15 says his friend poured boiling water on him after the two looked up “Hot Water Challenge” videos online

An Indiana teen suffered second degree burns after participating in a very risky and foolish online social media challenge.

"There's a limit to what you should do in a challenge and what you shouldn't", Clark told Fox 59. When he fell asleep, he says the friend heated up some water and poured it on him, in what was supposed to be a joke, according to CBS affiliate WXIN.

The Hot Water Challenge, which has been around for years, claimed a new victim in a 15-year-old teenager from Indiana.

The "challenge", which made national headlines previous year and has been circulating online since at least 2014, consists of someone either drinking boiling water through a straw, or having the water poured on them.

"My skin just fell off my chest, and then I looked in the mirror and I had skin falling off here and, on my face", Kyland told the news station.

Now Kyland and his mother say they want to make it known how risky the challenge is.

Kyland Clark, a 15-year-old from Indianapolis, looked up the Hot Water Challenge on YouTube. The young man said that after he and his friend watched the "Hot Water Challenge" on YouTube, he later went to sleep. He spent a week in the hospital, undergoing treatment. It also involves people posting to social media videos of themselves performing the challenge on an unsuspecting person. "I can guarantee it", said Dr. Ed Bartkus, EMS director at Methodist Hospital.

Kyland and his mother also want to make it known how risky the challenge is. "Don't take it overboard".

The unsafe viral prank, which has sent a handful of children across the country to the hospital - including one death -over the previous year usually consists of either drinking boiling water through a straw or pouring it on someone while they are sleeping, like what happened to Clark.

Doctors said they are hopeful that Clark's injuries won't be permanent.

Kyland's doctors say he should heal from his injuries.
