Fernando Hierro steps down as Spain manager after four games in charge

Rafa Benitez-Spain

Rubiales fired Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the World Cup when the coach announced he had signed to take over at Real Madrid.

Spain were beaten by tournament hosts Russian Federation on penalties in the last 16 following a 1-1 draw at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

Hierro has chose to "seek new horizons", according to the Spanish football federation (RFEF).

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously had reported that Spain's Fernando Hierro has resigned from his coaching job with the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

Spain only won one game at the World Cup, against Iran, and drew their other two group matches vs. Portugal and Morocco.

Lopetegui was named as Zinedine Zidane's successor at Real Madrid, with the Spanish Football Federation angered by the timing of the announcement with the World Cup just around the corner.

The 48-year-old has been out of work since leaving Barcelona last summer.

Economy Adds 213,000 Jobs in June, Unemployment Edges Up to 4 Percent
The job growth shows the labour market shrugging off worries about a slowdown triggered by trade fights or rising borrowing costs. Nearly half of June's construction jobs increase (+13,000) occurred in the "heavy and civil engineering" category, +6,000.

Enrique will be taking over from Lopetegui, who was sacked by Rubiales when the coach announced he had signed to take over at Real Madrid.

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez and former Spain internationals Michel and Quique Sanchez Flores had been considered contenders for the position but Luis Enrique was the No. 1 choice.

A formal unveiling of Enrique is likely to happen next week and Rubiales said: 'We have not spoken to anybody else - only Luis Enrique'.

"I don't think you can talk about the team breaking down or collapsing".

Barcelona then won the World Club Cup and at the end of the 2015-16 season added another Spanish double.

The former Spain worldwide has also turned down the option to return to his previous role of sports director.
