Former UK minister calls for second vote on Brexit to end stalemate

Donald Trump

On Friday, Trump said he gave Theresa May advice on how to negotiate Brexit, but she found it too "brutal".

Asked if Trump felt the queen had liked him, he said: "Well I don't want to speak for her, but I can tell you I liked her".

US President Donald Trump has seemingly breached royal protocol by discussing his private conversation with Queen Elizabeth II who he says thinks Brexit is a "very complex problem", according to an interview with British media.

Mrs May laughed off the president's legal action suggestion, saying she would carry on with negotiations, but added: "Interestingly, what the president also said at that press conference was "don't walk away". If we don't, we risk ending up with no Brexit at all", she wrote in the Mail on Sunday newspaper.

Piers even ventured to ask which way the Queen leans when it comes to Brexit, but the President said he decided not to ask about her personal viewpoint.

Britons voted to leave the European Union in a June 2016 referendum, and the issue has dominated the political landscape since.

But the scale of opposition to Mrs May's plan was made clear yesterday as MPs from both sides of the party lined up to criticise her plans with just months remaining before the country is due to leave the European Union on March 29, 2019.

Trump left Britain on Sunday after visiting with May, though his criticism of her plans seemed to overshadow attempts to secure a post-Brexit bilateral relationship.

Speaking about a trade deal, Mr Trump said: 'I think we're going to have a great trade deal, I've really no doubt about it.

Liam Fox, Britain's trade minister, tweeted after the Sun interview was published that it was terrific to hear Trump "talk so positively about UK & US Trade tonight at Blenheim Palace".

The US President sat down with the GMB host on Air Force One as he made his inaugural visit to Britain. May, he contended, was "a Remainer who remains a Remainer".

Mr Trump and wife Melania were due to spend half an hour with the Queen on Thursday but stayed longer than expected after their afternoon tea overran by 20 minutes.

Teresa May called on Sunday for the country to back her plan for "friction-free movement of goods", saying it was the only option to avoid undermining the peace in Northern Ireland and preserving the unity of the United Kingdom.

The size of the threat to her position should become clear on Monday when euroskeptic MPs put forward a series of proposals to toughen up the government's customs legislation during a parliamentary debate.

That has led to tension within the British Government, with Foreign Minister Boris Johnson resigning and saying her plan is not what people voted for.

Trump said Queen Elizabeth, 92, was a "fantastic woman", adding: "up close, you see she's so handsome. and she's got a lotta years left".
