Former UK minister calls for second vote on #Brexit to end stalemate

BRITAIN-EU-BREXIT

Doing so would lessen the chance of a vote of no confidence by Tories against the prime minister, something Brexiteers continue to threaten following the resignation of foreign secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit secretary David Davis last week.

The amendments passed with a majority of just three with one junior minister quitting and 14 Tories rebelling over the motion.

But this angered MPs from the party's pro-EU wing who refused to back the new amendments, saying they would undermine the UK's recently-announced negotiating position.

It gives the government the power to build new trade relationships around the world after the United Kingdom leaves the EU, and MPs who support staying in the EU's customs union are seeking to change its wording.

"I can not find someone who supported leave within the Conservative MPs (Members of Parliament) who is happy with the (Chequers) proposal if you talk to them in private", Peter Bone, a Conservative lawmaker and Brexit campaigner, told Sky News.

On Tuesday, they vote on the Trade Bill - the one May's government is most anxious about.

May now faces rebellion from the pro-EU flank of her Conservative party, who are outraged by her caving in to these harder Brexiteer demands.

The DUP's Brexit spokesman was commenting after Justine Greening, who quit Theresa May's cabinet in January, described Parliament as "gridlocked" over the plans to exit the European Union and said the public should be given the opportunity to reverse the "leave" vote.

A special ERG whipping operation, using the WhatsApp messaging service, has been created by Steve Baker, a former Brexit minister who resigned from the government last week, although ERG insiders would not put a number on how many they expected to rebel in the Commons. Whatever the proposal on the table, there will be MPs who vote it down.

What is the concern on the backbenchers, particularly among Brexiteers, in terms of risks of ousting Theresa May, undermining her, then possibly leading to a long, bitter leadership battle or possibly a general election, possibly leading to a general election.

Brexit-supporting Conservative backbenchers have forced the government to accept a series of amendments to its cross-border trade bill that appear to significantly alter the Brexit deal struck by the cabinet at Chequers.

The government's acceptance of the amendments did little to ease the tensions in May's party, which is at war with itself over the Brexit plans.

Eurosceptics have rallied support against the Mrs May's plan agreed at Chequers as they build up their campaign against plans to retain European Union regulations on goods and agriculture.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Lisa Chambers said she is not sure "where we go from here".

Her gruelling schedule will begin with her last Prime Minister's Question Time clashes with Jeremy Corbyn until September.
