Formula One: Neck and neck, but Sebastian Vettel wins

Vettel also triumphed in Canada, a race Hamilton had won for the previous three years and six times in total, while Mercedes' hopes of a fifth successive Austrian Grand Prix win ended with mechanical failures to both cars.

In France, two weeks earlier, Vettel drove into Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes on the opening lap.

Hamilton suffered from a collision with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen during the first lap of the race.

When asked if he was OK with the Raikkonen/Hamilton incident, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff added: "No, I'm not comfortable at all with the incident because it's tiresome being taken out in the first lap".

"Incompetent, who Kimi? Who is he to judge what a driver is doing in the auto, I can accept it from Jacques (Villeneuve) because he's been a driver, but that person? No". "It was a racing incident and nothing more".

About conceding the lead to championship leader Sebastian Vettel from pole, Lewis Hamilton can have no quarrel. "I guess I wanted to give a boost to England", he said.

Hamilton rushed back into the mix for a podium spot with the majority of runners picking a one-stop strategy until Marcus Ericsson lost control of his Sauber at Turn 1, and his fierce shunt into the tyre barrier brought out a lap 33 safety auto. It was the second time a Ferrari has hit us in the first corner. Vettel pitted from the lead, but Bottas stayed out, to lead on lap 34, as did Hamilton.

"I think we need to improve our vehicle until the end of the year, that will be key because then you have something to fight, and if you have something to fight and something to play with, you can make things happen".

Despite a solid performance by Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari, spearheaded by Sebastian Vettel, came out on top during the British Grand Prix.

"We saw blistering last week in Austria, so keeping the tyres in good condition is going to be the key tomorrow given the high temperatures. Sometimes we say dumb s**t and we learn from it". It soon developed into a Ferrari-Mercedes duel, with Raikkonen also challenging the third-placed Hamilton.

Raikkonen held off his Finnish compatriot Valteri Bottas to finish third despite a ten-second time penalty after admitting culpability in his collision with Hamilton.

While the German auto manufacturer has taken pole position at the last three grands prix, on each occasion Ferrari has caused trouble by being able to make much better getaways.

With the run of starts having set up a pattern, Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin said on Tuesday the team was doing all it could to try to do better.

"If he really said something like that, he should be ashamed".

Meanwhile, Hamilton who missed a chance of a sixth straight victory in his home race sent a message to his fans.
