Game of Thrones racks up 22 Emmy nominations

2018 Emmys Michael Che Colin Jost

And even some shows that did very well in overall nominations, like HBO's "Game of Thrones", saw some notable stars absent from the final tallies. It is worth noting that this is the first year that WWE was able to get their programming on the preliminary ballot. Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale" comes in second with 20 nominations.

Netflix's GLOW was nominated for Best Comedy Series while Betty Gilpin, who portrays Debbie on the series, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress In a Comedy.

HBO, which was recently acquired by wireless carrier AT&T Inc, had 108 nominations, and noted in a statement that it was the eighth year it had gathered 100 nominations or more.

In particular, Game of Thrones led the genre pack with a whopping 22 nominations in categories like Outstanding Drama Series, Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, and Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

HBO's Westworld fared well in both the categories for Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Lead Actress in a Drama Series. In addition to Stranger Things and Black Mirror, programs like GLOW, The Crown, and Grace and Frankie are also up for awards.

The streamer's historical limited series, "The Looming Tower", on the other hand, picked up four nominations, including Jeff Daniels for lead actor in a limited series or movie, casting, directing (Craig Zisk), and supporting actor in a limited series or movie (Michael Stuhlbarg).

The return of "Thrones" did tighten the race up on the drama side, but the absence of "Veep" from contention this year didn't seem to do much to help on the comedy side.

The 70th annual Emmy Awards will air September 17 on NBC. This year she had a shot at a nomination for Best Comedy Guest Actress for her multi-episode arc on "Curb Your Enthusiasm", but she was left out again.
