Google lets 3rd-party app developers read your emails

Software Developers are Scanning the Inboxes of Gmail Users

As per a report by Business Insider, software developed by third parties are able to scan and read your Gmail, apparently without much restriction from Google. Though there is no evidence that third-party developers have misused the data, knowing that unknown persons can access personal data certainly raises apprehensions.

One could say that users are responsible for granting access to their data.

The revelation comes a year after Google announced it would stop scanning Gmail inboxes for information to personalize advertisements, claiming it wanted users to "remain confident that Google will keep privacy and security paramount".

In Google's case, outside developers must pass a vetting process, and as part of that process, Google makes sure that they have an acceptable privacy agreement. There is also no option to deny certain access, it is always an all or nothing type of situation. Google stopped that practice a year ago, but a Wall Street Journal investigation shows there are plenty of apps that have access to your email, and some of them feed some of your emails to real humans.

While these kind of apps do ask for user consent, numerous forms don't make it explicitly clear that a human will be reading through your emails, not just a machine. Because the messages aren't end-to-end encrypted, the company has the ability to read them whenever it wants.

Google is allowing app developers to sift through your Gmail account.

Gmail has about 1.4 billion users while Microsoft and Oath, the group formed after Verizon bough Yahoo!, are the next two biggest email providers.

"Nevertheless, privacy advocates and many tech industry executives say opening access to email data risks similar leaks", the report said.

With Gmail being a free email service, it makes sense that Google would need to find a way to make money, right? "Signing in with Google" apps use your Google Account to sign into other website or apps.

If any apps give you the creeps about what kind of data it can pilfer from you, you can simply click on "Remove access" to banish it into the digital trash bin.

You can remove access for any service or application listed on the page and should do so for any that you don't use.
