Greenpeace crash Superman-like drone into French nuclear plant

Watch Greenpeace Crashes Superman Drone Into Nuclear Power Plant to Expose Facility’s Dangers

The latest drone "attack" follows a series of Greenpeace stunts, which the environmental group claims have been staged to expose the weakness of French nuclear plants.

France generates about 75 percent of its electricity from nuclear power in 19 nuclear sites operated by the state-controlled EDF.

A Superman drone remotely controlled by Greenpeace activists crashes into a spent fuel storage building at a nuclear power plant in Bugey, France.

'This action again highlights the extreme vulnerability of [these] types of buildings, which contain the highest amount of radioactivity in nuclear plants, ' Greenpeace said.

Greenpeace says the spent-fuel buildings have not been created to withstand outside attacks and are the most vulnerable part of French nuclear plants. The drone crashed against the wall of the plant's spent-fuel pool building and plummeted to the ground like a kryptonite balloon.

Responding to the action, the French electricity group EDF said that police had intercepted one of two drones piloted by Greenpeace and announced plans to file a formal complaint with authorities.

Greenpeace France spokesman Cyril Cornier told Le Parisien, in French, that the action itself did not pose any danger to the plant, its workers, or the public, but insisted that by crashing the flying device into the plant's "most fragile point", they had proven beyond any doubt that the security of the facility "is absolutely not assured".

Greenpeace activists have broken into nuclear plants in France several times in the past.

In October past year, Greenpeace activists breached security and launched fireworks over EDF's Cattenom nuclear plant. Last week, 19 activists were handed suspended sentences for breaking into another nuclear plant last November.

The overflights of power plants by drones are part of the topics raised by the parliamentary commission of inquiry on the safety and security of nuclear facilities, whose highly anticipated report will be presented Thursday.
