How major US stock indexes fared Thursday

Facebook's massive drop also hurt shares of Amazon, Alphabet and other high-growth companies, and Nasdaq futures fell as much as 0.85 percent, suggesting the market could open lower on Thursday.

US stock indexes wavered between small gains and losses in early trading Friday as investors weighed the latest batch of company earnings reports and new government data showing the USA economy surged in the second quarter at the fastest pace since 2014.

In after-hours trading, they were modestly positive in volatile trading following the company's quarterly results.

The ecommerce-giant Amazon reported earnings Thursday evening.

The S&P 500 index fell 3 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,833 as of 10:15 a.m.

The Nasdaq Composite dropped 1 percent to finish at 7,852.18, led by a steep decline in Facebook shares.

The Dow Jones Industrial average pushed higher in the afternoon trading session, as optimism about trade discussions between the USA and the European Union encouraged the Big Board to take a positive direction. More stocks rose than fell on the New York Stock Exchange.

Ford lost 6 percent to $9.89 after the automaker disclosed a sharp drop in quarterly profits and said it would undertake a restructuring that will cost $11 billion over the next three to five years.

Juncker went on to say that the two leaders also agreed that as long as negotiations were ongoing, "we'll hold off further tariffs and reassess existing tariffs on steel and aluminum" put in place by the Trump administration. "With Facebook reporting disappointing metrics, that caused some rotation and broadened market participation", Eric Wiegand, senior portfolio manager at U.S. Bank Private Wealth Management in NY, told Reuters. Brent crude, used to price global oils, dropped 2 cents to $75.10. Marathon Petroleum climbed 7.3 percent to $80.16.
