Huge 600kg, 4.7m long crocodile caught after decade-long hunt

A decade-long hunt for a notorious Northern Territory monster has come to an end after the capture of a 600kg crocodile

Wildlife rangers in northern Australia captured a massive 600 kilogram (1,300 pound) crocodile after first spotting it almost a decade ago.

A Department of Tourism and Culture spokeswoman said rangers removed the 600kg croc from a trap at a private property at Taylor's Park.

"We've called it a lot of things over the years because it's been so hard to catch".

Authorities had been hunting the giant crocodile for a decade, ranger John Burke said.

The crocodile, a male, was "removed" to "help prevent human interaction in the more populated areas", the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife said in a Facebook post.

"But you've also got to admire the size of the animal and how old it is".

In 2017, 371 crocodiles were captured by rangers in the Northern Territory cities of Darwin, Palmerston and Katherine alone, according to the department's website.

The lengthy game of hide-and-seek finally came to an end when the 1,322-pound predator unwittingly swam into an elaborate trap set up in the Katherine River.

"He is the biggest crocodile the Wildlife Operations Team have ever caught in the Katherine River". This year, 190 have been captured.

This move was a long time coming, according to Reuters: the authorities of Australia's Northern Territory have been trying to trap and relocate the creature since 2010. Crocodiles are farmed for their meat and hides, but large and battle-scarred crocs are usually unsuitable for the handbag market.

The largest crocodile caught in a "trap" was more than 16 feet (4.8 metres), and the largest one "harpooned" by rangers was also more than 16 feet (4.8 metres), it states.

Generally, crocodiles live an average of 70-years, though a rare few exceed 100.
