India 'A' warms up for Test series with a big score

Prithvi Shaw

Rahane, too, was sent packing in the next over by Sam Curran as India A slumped to 189 for 6. "They were a good side, and we had a pretty comprehensive victory".

Though Pant is nominally the reserve wicketkeeper in India's 18-man Test squad, behind Dinesh Karthik, this was his second fifty of the match, following his first-innings 58, and was produced against a strong and multi-faceted attack.

"It was a bit freaky captaining a team with all this experience". This has been my first Lions experience and it's been really enjoyable - 100% I want more.

Although far from done, the batting display, coupled with the senior team's showing in the third One-Day International against England, did little to alleviate earlier held fears regarding India's batting on English shores. But they've still got Rahane to come, and Karun Nair who's scored 300 in a Test against England.

That triggered a collapse as the Indians lost their last six wickets for eight runs inside five overs - four of them falling to Curran, who exploited cloudy conditions in a superb spell from the New Road end. And yet, it was Shaw who kept India rolling on before three quick wickets saw India crumble. Malan, another current Test player, was the next to go as he was dismissed by Mohammed Siraj for 74 off 158 balls.

India A struggled to 106 for four in 32 overs after veteran Alastair Cook's marathon 180 powered England Lions to 423 all out on the second day of the only four-day unofficial Test here.

Captain Rory Burns (38) and Dawid Malan (56) added 47 to steady the innings before Siraj struck again, removing the opener in the 27th over.

Once Nadeem cleaned up Malan in the 44th over, Woakes joined Pope as the duo tried to resurrect the innings.

Woakes drove a catch to deep cover in the over after Pope had reached a 71-ball half century, and Burns declared to set the Indians a tricky mini-session in the fading light.

"As the game's gone on I certainly feel like I'm getting close to full tilt".
