30 feared dead as bus falls into gorge in Uttarakhand toll expected to rise

Senior district superintendent of police J. R. Joshi said investigators had yet to pin-point what caused the accident but were examining the crash scene. The reason for the accident isn't known yet, police said.

At least seven other people are believed to be critically injured.

The 28-seater bus was carrying 60 people, all residents of Pauri and Nainital, from Bamnisain (Pauri) to Ramnagar (Nainital) when it plunged into the gorge at 8.15 am.

Trivendra Rawat, the chief minister of Uttarakhand, said the bus skidded and fell into a 700ft (213m) deep gorge.

At least three others are injured.

All bodies were recovered and the injured rescued from the mangled remains of the vehicle which rolled down into the 200 metre deep gorge before crashing into a shallow stream, he said.

A team of police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have rushed to the spot and carrying out the rescue operation.

The incident on Sunday occurred in Nanidhanda area of Pauri Garhwal district in the state Uttarakhand.

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed their condolences to the families of those killed in the accident. Rescue operations were taken up police.

India has the world's deadliest roads, with more than 110,000 people killed annually.

More than 150,000 people are killed in road accidents each year with most deaths blamed on poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.
