Inside the numbers of the ridiculous Kevin Anderson-John Isner Wimbledon semifinal

Anderson tops Isner 26-24 at Wimbledon other SF suspended

The eighth seed earlier won the longest-ever Wimbledon semi-final in a test of endurance with American John Isner that finished 26-24 in the fifth set after six hours and 36 minutes.

In what was described as a "sensationally high-quality match", Djokovic edged past Nadal after an intense five-hour, 14-minute match that took place over a two-day period due to Wimbledon curfews.

Anderson is the first South African man since Brian Norton in 1921 to reach the Wimbledon final. There was this: the tumble Anderson took late in the match, only to somehow hop up, hit the ball left handed and ultimately claim the point - all as the typically stoical Wimbledon crowd gasped and screamed above them.

Djokovic, the Wimbledon champion in 2011, 2014 and 2015, will be bidding for a 13th Grand Slam title when he faces Anderson on Sunday.

We could go on, but we'll stop there and give you a taste of the social media reaction to the game instead.

Djokovic led 5-3 but Nadal won a 23-stroke exchange with a dropshot to lead 6-5.

Isner was (and maybe still is) best known for 2010 Wimbledon, when he beat Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the fifth set in the longest match in tennis history (11 hours, 5 minutes over three days). That's why you put in X amount of hours on the practice court, preparation, trying to be as professional as you can, because you need to compete with a guy like Nadal.

"So I apologise if I'm not more excited right now because the mix of emotions getting through something like that is quite different".

They played until approximately 11 p.m. local time under the roof, when play was suspended.

S. Korea's Moon optimistic on US-N. Korea diplomatic thaw
Washington has been accused of being "gangster-like" in their requests during negotiation talks between U.S. Hundreds of remains have been repatriated since 1990, but the process has been fraught with mistrust.

Despite going on for almost seven hours, Isner was nowhere close to beating his own record for the longest tennis match history - a first-round victory over Nicolas Mahut, which went on for more than 11 hours over three days and finished 70-68 in the fifth in 2010 also at Wimbledon.

Anderson is contesting his second Grand Slam final, having lost to Nadal in straight sets at the 2017 US Open on his only previous appearance in the title match at a major.

As member of the ATP players' Council, the opinions of Anderson and Isner carry significant weight.

Following his defeat Friday, Isner said the time was "overdue" to institute fifth-set tiebreaks - for the good of players, fans and broadcasters alike.

"He's probably the greatest fighter ever to play this game", Djokovic said of Nadal.

In the 50th game, Isner took down the opening point before Anderson captured the next four - including two on aces.

"Considering he's playing only his second Grand Slam final, obviously he has a lot more to gain", said Djokovic.

In a column in the London Evening Standard, nine-time Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova said her "dream match" would have been on Centre Court against Serena Williams.
