Iranian President Hassan Rouhani threatens to close Strait of Hormuz

The 2015 agreement, between Iran and the USA and other powers, had agreed to ease sanctions on Iran if the country reined in its nuclear program.

For his part, the Austrian official said his country, as a member state of the European Union, supports the nuclear accord reached between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the United States, Britain, France, China and Russian Federation - plus Germany.

Worldwide inspectors have concluded Iran was complying with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which was agreed upon in 2015 by seven countries in an global effort led by the United States and European allies.

"Sometimes it seems the world has become desensitized to the regime's authoritarianism at home and its campaigns of violence overseas, but the proud Iranian people are not staying silent about their government's many abuses", the US's top diplomat charged.

The suggestion, which did not mention the strategic Strait of Hormuz, was in reaction to looming U.S. sanctions and efforts by the Trump administration to prevent countries from purchasing Iranian oil.

Addressing a gathering of Iranian diplomats on Sunday, President Hassan Rouhani said, "The Americans must fully understand that peace with Iran is the mother of all the peace, and war with Iran would be the mother of all wars", Tehran Times reported.

Trump earlier this year pulled the United States out of the global deal meant to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon and ordered increased American sanctions.

In particular, the Fed's most recent rate hikes could dilute some of the benefit of the tax cuts Trump signed into law past year . The reaction to Trump's remarks in the financial markets was muted. "As usual, not a level playing field", Mr.

Trump has made Iran a favorite target since his unexpected rapprochement with nuclear-armed North Korea.

The new initiative-which the White House refused to discuss with Reuters-comes just weeks after Pompeo unveiled what critics described as a wildly unrealistic set of demands that Iran must meet if it wishes to engage in nuclear discussions with the United States.

During his address, Pompeo compared Iran's leaders to the mafia, while also declaring USA support for the people of Iran, especially protesters who have taken to the streets recently in opposition to the current regime. "The Iran deal is defective at its core".

USA officials, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, have expressed support for the Iranian people and "their struggle for freedom".

"The Americans should learn very well that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace and war with Iran is the mother of all wars", Rouhani said at a meeting with the Iranian diplomatic missions in world countries.

Iran and the European Union are working to salvage the 2015 accord that lifted sanctions on the country in exchange for concessions on its nuclear work.

Iran's economy could take a huge hit due to increased sanctions.
