Jones earns 1st career Cup win at Daytona

The pole is the fourth of his career

Defending race victor Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has won the second stage of the Cup Series race at Daytona.

At the end of a week in which talk of younger drivers needing to show force in NASCAR racing edged into the conversation, one did.

"How about that boys and girls", Jones shouted to the crowd as he climbed out of his race winning ride. My first Cup win, my first win at Daytona, my first superspeedway win. "I thought we were out of it and all of a sudden we're right back in it". Survival was the key component for success and those that were able to avoid the many melees had a shot to win as Jones proved.

Jones, 22, beat Martin Truex Jr, AJ Allmendinger, Kasey Kahne and Chris Buescher in a two-lap shootout. With 36 laps to go Larson had a tire go down and Stenhouse Jr. drove into the rear of the No. 42 Chevrolet.

Who Had a Bad Day: It seemed nobody was immune to getting caught in a huge accident Saturday night and that tone started on lap 54 when almost half the field was involved in a multi-car melee.

STAGE 2 WINNER: Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

The overtime period was initially set up by a wreck with four laps to go in the original 160-lap distance involving Michael McDowell, Aric Almirola, Jimmie Johnson and Joey Gase.

Stenhouse also won the first stage, his first of the stage victory year. Stenhouse bumped Kyle Busch and sent the No. 18 Toyota into the wall.

Brad Keselowski won the battle off of pit road and would lead the field at the start of stage 2 in the Coe Zero 400 at Daytona. Then as Keselowski was trying to get the lead back, Stenhouse Jr. got into the back of Keselowski and turned him into Kurt Busch, causing the "Big One" in turn 3. Eight laps later, Byron and Kyle Busch were involved and the caution resulted in Byron losing his spot. Those are the kinds of things that get other drivers heated, potentially even to the point where they want to start throwing punches.

Defending race victor Ricky Stenhouse Jr. started the melee when he tapped and turned Keselowski, who was running third.

"When one auto sits sideways in front of the field at 200 miles per hour, you can't get through it", driver Joey Logano said of the mishaps.

After winning the first two stages, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was involved in three accidents, with Kyle Larson with 37 laps to go, a single-car spin with 11 laps to go and the wreck on the first overtime restart. "It usually happens much later in the night".

Elliott was on the pole on the front with Hendrick Motorsports teammate Alex Bowman.
