May says Trump told her to sue the European Union over Brexit

In her television interview, May also revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump had advised her to "sue" the European Union.

"No, no - we're going into negotiations with them", May said she told the U.S. president.

Leading Tory Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg has called the White Paper a "bad deal for Britain".

"Interestingly, what the president also said at that press conference was 'don't walk away, '" May continued.

On the prospects of a trade deal collapsing, he added: "I think it's worse for United Kingdom than it is for us because we're doing very well, and we're doing very well at trade, and we're doing incredibly well overall, and we're having the best numbers we've ever had as a country -best employment numbers, best GDP numbers".

However, he stopped short of revealing his advice to the Prime Minister, saying that May "found it too brutal".

"This would be the ultimate betrayal of the Brexit vote", May wrote in The Mail on Sunday newspaper. "The chance to become a credible trading partner will be compromised and we will be unable to strike free-trade deals".

Her revelation about how Trump advised her ended several days of speculation about what advice the USA leader had offered the prime minister.

She said others were planning to try and bring down a bill that was essential to enable Britain to prepare for life outside the European Union, which would "risk our ability to make the necessary preparations for a no deal".

She said her proposal is the only way to prevent a hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland after Brexit, while also protecting supply chains and the jobs that depend on them.

Johnson, warned Monday that the Brexit "dream is dying" and Britain is "headed for the status of colony" with May's plan to stay close to the EU.

Earlier this week two senior ministers resigned in protest at May's plans for trade with the European Union after Britain leaves the bloc next March.

And Robert Courts, who took over from David Cameron as MP for Witney, resigned from his role as parliamentary private secretary at the Foreign Office.

Linking the fate of Brexit to her own survival in such an explicit way indicates just how precarious May's position is after her government was thrust into crisis and US President Donald Trump publicly criticised her Brexit strategy.

'My job as Prime Minister is to deliver for them, but also I've got to be hard-headed and practical about this and do it in a way that ensures we get the best interests for the United Kingdom'.

In addition to criticizing May's handling of Brexit negotiations, Trump has gone after many of his European NATO allies for relying on the US for trade and defence spending, and called the EU a trade "foe" in an interview with CBS on Saturday.

Her message comes ahead of crucial votes in the House of Commons on trade and customs policy in the coming week, during which the government is likely to be under pressure to get them through Parliament.
