May's Brexit plan could 'kill' US trade deal

Donald Trump steps out of the US presidential state car called

But Trump's visit came against the backdrop of tensions in the trans-Atlantic alliance: Mass protests of Trump in the streets of London, his second-guessing of May's handling of Brexit in an interview with a British newspaper and a string of global summits that have often pitted the US against its traditional allies.

When Trump spoke to the British tabloid yesterday, he slammed May while threatening to revoke a USA -U.K. trade deal over her handling of Brexit.

It comes just days after the president declined to say whether Mrs May should remain in post, said he had "always liked" Boris Johnson, who quit as foreign secretary over the Chequers agreement, and described the United Kingdom as being in "turmoil".

In the busy south London neighborhood of Brixton, Victor Greetham, who runs a jazz bar, said he hadn't been to a demonstration since he protested against the Iraq War in 2003, but he planned to attend one of the protests against Trump's visit.

"It was from right here at Chequers that Prime Minister Churchill phoned President Roosevelt after Pearl Harbor", Trump said, referencing the surprise attack by the Japanese on December 7, 1941, that plunged the US into World War II. Asked how he felt about the tens of thousands of protesters awaiting him in Britain, he insisted: "I think they like me a lot in the UK".

In a wide-ranging news conference alongside May, which followed a meeting at the prime minister's country estate, Chequers, Trump also said that immigration had been "very bad for Europe" and is changing the culture there.

Trump clashed with Mr Khan previous year after a terrorist attacked people on London Bridge and Borough Market.

Duncan suggested the president had not seen the detail of the plan when he gave the interview on Wednesday, while also stressing that the much-vaunted special relationship was about much more than Brexit.

"I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn't agree, she didn't listen to me", Trump said.

Trump, Merkel Have ‘Great Meeting’ At NATO Summit With Markedly Different Tone
But Ushakov told reporters on Friday that the USA side in the summit may raise the issue of alleged election meddling. "I don't think you'll have any 'Gee, I did it". "I really believe, that when he tells me that, he means it".

He will then travel to Chequers for bilateral talks with May on a range of foreign policy issues including Russian Federation, trade, Brexit, and the Middle East, before meeting Queen Elizabeth in Windsor and leaving for Scotland. It was one of over a hundred protests police expected during Trump's four-day trip.

"You have a mayor who has done a awful job in London", Trump said, adding later that Khan had "done a very bad job on terrorism".

TRT World's Sara Morice has more on Trump's visit to the UK.

Ms May's formal proposals were published on Thursday, but hours later the Sun newspaper published an interview with Mr Trump where he appeared to side with the prime minister's critics.

At the dinner May made a direct pitch for a trade deal with Washington, praising the friendship between the two allies and glossing over Trump's previous remarks that Britain was a "hot spot" in turmoil over Brexit.

"We are cracking down right now on the European Union because they have not treated the United States fairly on trading", Trump said.

His late mother hailed from Scotland, and he owns two luxury golf courses there.

A report in Vanity Fair read, "She wore a buttercup gown with shoulder capes that says, "I'm the princess now". 'Now he might not like the current president, but I represent the United States.
