Mercedes ignites war of words with Ferrari over British GP incident

Marcus Ericsson suffered a huge crash in the British Grand Prix

This gave Bottas the lead of the race and track position over Sebastian Vettel, while Hamilton got ahead of Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen.

Referring to an incident at Le Castellet last month, where Vettel hit Valtteri Bottas at the first corner, he explained: "It's two races in which a Mercedes has been taken out by a Ferrari".

Hamilton afforded Raikkonen space at the right-handed third turn during the frenetic Silverstone race, but the Finn locked up, before his left-front tyre thudded into the right-rear of Hamilton's Mercedes.

The Englishman was sent into a spin, and he re-joined the track at the back of the pack.

The stewards punished Raikkonen with a 10-second penalty, usually reserved for the most open-and-shut cases.

Bottas lost out but Hamilton had showed great pace before the safety auto and after Vettel passed Bottas for the lead with five laps to go, Hamilton overtook his team-mate a lap later to move into second.

Instead, the Mercedes driver slipped eight points behind Sebastian Vettel, with the real possibility that his German rival will be leading into the August break.

"It was a super start, a super race and, yeah, a hammer finish", Vettel said.

What was Raikkonen's penalty 10 seconds?

"It is a lot of points that Valtteri and I have lost in those two scenarios". So I was nervous I had lost part of my floor or something because the auto was moving for unknown reasons, but then it started to get better and better, after some tweaks to the settings.

"It's silly to think that anything happened was deliberate", he insisted. "I would struggle to be that precise to take somebody out".

"I lost almost 3kg [in body fluids] trying to get back to the top for you and my team", he said, addressing his 6.7 million followers on the social media platform.

"There wasn't any intention and I find it a bit unnecessary to even go there".

And despite his breathless comeback, Hamilton was visibly furious with Raikkonen's behaviour.

He was clearly upset after the race - ducking the interviews on the track and saying little in the green room before the podium.

"This is the greatest race of the year and the greatest crowd, I am sorry I could not bring it home for you today", Hamilton told the crowd.

"I barely had any energy at the end to stand, let alone talk".

"I came here to clarify, if he actually said something like that, I mean, he should be ashamed of himself", Arrivabene said. "Who's he to judge what a driver is doing in the vehicle, I can accept it from Jacques [Villeneuve, Sky Italia pundit] because he's been a driver, but that person? No". It's so physical nowadays. It should not have been, but for me, Lewis's job, being last, coming all the way to second, shows what performance he had here.
