Mexico elections underway amid disgust with corruption, violence

Lopez Obrador is leading in the polls

Trump, for his part, has threatened to withdraw the United States from the agreement, which he routinely describes as one of the worst deals the USA has ever entered into. Now, relations could be strained even further. "Saying Yes to a New Start for Mexico, Saying No to a Wall". Early Monday, with about 50 percent of the votes counted, Lopez Obrador's advantage was close to the quick count's statistical sample. That includes standing up to Trump. They said they are concerned about problems ranging from crime to corruption in their country.

Mexico's peso led gains among emerging-market currencies as sentiment improved overnight on speculation that Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the country's next president, may seek a congenial relationship with his US counterpart.

"Trump tweeted Sunday that "I look very much forward to working with him".

The elections have significance for the United States as well.

Lopez Obrador, a 64-year-old former mayor of Mexico City, won a landslide election victory on Sunday, dealing a crushing blow to establishment parties and becoming the first leftist to win the Mexican presidency since one-party rule ended in 2000. In reality, Mexico has always been respectful of Trump and the USA government. We have a border of more than 3,000 kilometres, more than 12 million Mexicans live in the United States. Andrew Selee, president of the Migration Policy Institute in Washington, saw a change from past Mexican leaders who were "obsessed" about being on good terms with the United States "It means that the USA can't take Mexico for granted any more", he said. Indeed, AMLO has compared Trump's attacks on Mexicans to the way Hitler and the Nazis talked about Jews and called the American president "erratic and arrogant".

In the past, Lopez Obrador has offered criticism to the shift in United States stance on immigration and trade. This commitment appears inherently and unmistakably anti-Mexican.

Yet this is a false equivalency.

This conciliatory tone and talk about "reaching an understanding" with the U.S. after the election is not what many of his voters want to see.

"If there is any change, I think it's going to be for the worse". Both men recognize a need to re-negotiate NAFTA, with the aim of benefiting their respective countries.

He said Mexico's "very strong" immigration laws could be used to help keep illegal immigrants away from the US border.

Although AMLO holds a firm stance on immigration policies, he said he wants a healthy diplomacy with the U.S.

It is hard to see AMLO continuing his predecessors' security policies and anti-immigration efforts on Mexico's southern border.

Some see Obrador as a new champion for the poor.

Voters turned their backs on the two parties which have ruled Mexico for nearly 100 years to give the left-winger the stunning culmination of a decades-long dream.

On the campaign trail, he made repeated calls to assert Mexico's sovereignty.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has cast his vote in elections to choose his successor.

A majority of Mexicans seem to have exhausted of being "America's backyard". The president-in-waiting, whose term will begin December 1, devoted much of his speech to appealing to citizens of all stripes and seeking to reassure those who have eyed his candidacy nervously.

"While Obrador's victory may ease concerns of political instability, there still remains a thick smog of uncertainty over Mexico's economic outlook", said Lukman Otunuga of FXTM.

AMLO also broke with neoliberal dogma and called for Mexico to become agriculturally self-sufficient and to stop importing food from the US.
