Micron says has not received Chinese injunction on chip sales

Micron Stock Drops On China Court Ruling To Ban Its Memory Chips

"UMC is pleased with today's decision", UMC president Jason Wang said in a statement.

The case is also part of a broader dispute between the two companies after the U.S. chipmaker accused UMC previous year of stealing Micron's designs in an attempt to help China advance its domestic chip industry. UMC invests heavily in its intellectual property and aggressively pursues any company that infringes UMC's patents.' UMC filed patent infringement lawsuits against Micron with the mainland China courts in January, 2018, covering three areas, including specific memory applications related to DDR4, SSD and memory used in graphics cards. Last December, Micron filed a lawsuit against UMC in the Northern District Court of California of the United States, claiming that UMC violated intellectual property rights by copying its memory patents and trade secrets.

As of 11:42 a.m., shares of UMC had gained 0.56 percent to NT$18.05 (US$0.58), with 81.87 million shares changing hands, outperforming the broader market index, which was down 0.12 percent at 10,702.91.

Micron, which gets a chunk of its revenues from China, said it had not been served with the injunction and would not comment further until it had reviewed documentation from the Chinese court.

Micron reiterated its fiscal fourth quarter revenue forecast of $8 billion to $8.4 billion.

In its filing, Micron said UMC, which is scaling up its China business and plans to list on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, had poached key Micron employees with the aim of helping Fujian Jinhua improve its own DRAM technology. It accused UMC and partner Fujian Jinhua Integrated Circuit Company of stealing RAM secrets and staff.

During the patent infringement trial, the remedies UMC sought were to stop Micron from making, importing or selling the allegedly infringing products, and also that Micron destroy all inventories and pay compensation. One of the other companies, South Korea's SK Hynix, said the investigation is over suspected price fixing.

The Micron ban could be a major opportunity for other global chipmakers to step in.

Others believe the ban will be short-lived.

Micron claimed ignorance about the ruling, saying it had not seen any paperwork from the Chinese court. When the ban on the sale of Micron products in China is realized, the ban is expected to benefit the Korean semiconductor industry. The order applied to 26 products, including Micron's DRAM and NAND flash products. These Chinese companies would all need to find another supplier to meet their demand.
