Mosquitoes with West Nile virus found in Springfield

Mosquitoes in Benton County are testing positive for West Nile virus.

In addition, the first collection of mosquitoes infected with the virus of the 2018 season was also reported.

The mosquitoes were collected as part of an ongoing surveillance program that helps the state better understand the risk of diseases spread by mosquitoes.

Most people infected with the virus have either no symptoms or experience a mild illness such as fever, headache, and body aches.

A Manhattan resident who is older than 50 was infected with mosquito-borne virus and hospitalized earlier this month with encephalitis, health officials said.

The Florida Department of Health in Bay County confirmed the case Friday. Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property by emptying flower pots, old auto tires, buckets, and other containers.

Consider the use of mosquito repellent, according to directions, when it is necessary to be outdoors. The risk is low right now because the culex tarsalis mosquito has been detected, and the risk will jump to moderate when the virus itself is detected.

DRAIN - Mosquitoes lay their eggs on standing water.

"West Nile virus activity in the state is increasing, so I urge Californians to take every possible precaution to protect against mosquito bites", said CDPH Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith, in a press release.

Health department officials trap at one location only, Beerman said.

The department urges people to prevent mosquito bites by using repellent, putting inspect netting over strollers, wearing long sleeves and trousers, repairing holes in window screens and eliminating mosquito breeding grounds.

DEET - Apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535 according to label instructions.

Avoid being outdoors from dusk to dawn, peak mosquito biting times, if possible. Plus, residents should make repairs to window screens and door screens in order to keep mosquitoes outside.
