‘Murderers!’ Violent protests erupt after Chicago police shoot armed man

Members of the Chicago police department scuffle with an angry crowd at the scene of a police involved shooting in Chicago on Saturday

Protests in Chicago escalated on Saturday night, becoming a tense clash between demonstrators and police over the fatal shooting of a man on the city's South Side.

"The whole situation was hard for all involved", Guglielmi said on Sunday. Officers pulled people to the ground and struck them with batons. Police say four people were arrested and some officers suffered minor injuries from being pelted with rocks and bottles, including some filled with urine. A weapon was recovered at the scene, he said, but did not say whether the man was armed when he was shot.

Four protesters were taken into custody, but only one was going to be charged, police said.

Fred Waller, Chicago police patrol chief, told reporters that officers saw a bulge beneath Augustus' clothes that they believed to be a gun. "When asked if the man had fired his weapon, Waller said", Not that I know of".

Police Superintendant Eddie Johnson says it was the fastest he's ever ordered body-worn camera video released.

The teenager was shot 16 times by Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke, even though the teen was walking away from the police officer.

The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for 30 days, authorities said.

The unidentified man was shot dead after being pursued on foot by officers who wanted to question him.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability, which investigates shootings involving officers, said it was analysing the video and asking anyone who may have captured footage to share it with the agency. After the release of that video, the city erupted in protest.

On Sunday morning, the streets where the melee over the police-involved shooting broke out were eerily silent, although another protest was scheduled for later in the day.

Though police have yet to release the victim's name, activist organization Black Youth Project 100 identified him on Twitter as local barber Harith "Snoop" Augustus.

This latest upset shows that the city is still a long way from healing the tensions between the cops and the black community as a result of the Laquan McDonald police-involved shooting in 2014.

Police had sent the handgun and two magazines of bullets for testing, said police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, who added that Augustus wasn't a known gang member and had no recent arrest history. McDonald's death led to the ouster of the police chief and a series of reforms meant to prevent future police abuses and to hold officers accountable. Police also released a 50-second slow-motion clip showing Augustus reaching toward his waist.

Online, many expressed anger over the shooting and the actions of the police.
