Named as one of the main reasons of diabetes

Air pollution causes nearly 15,000 cases of type 2 diabetes in UK each year, study suggests

While the risk of pollution-induced diabetes is a threat around the world, the researchers found that it is higher in lower-income countries such as India, Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea, and Guyana, which lack clean air policies and resources for environmental mitigation systems. Air pollution soared in New Delhi on June 14 to hazardous levels rarely seen outside winter months as sand blown from deserts enveloped the Indian capital in a once-in-a-decade phenomenon.

PARIS, France - Air pollution caused one in 7 new cases of diabetes in 2016, according to a United States study, which found even low levels raised the chances of developing the chronic disease.

Dr Emily Burns, of Diabetes UK, said: "This global study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting an association between air pollution and the development of Type 2 diabetes".

The study also discovered that nearly 10 million years of healthy life were lost all across the world in 2016 due to pollution-linked diabetes.

Senior study author named Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, and an assistant professor of medicine at Washington University was reported saying that there is an undeniable relationship between the health problem of diabetes and the air pollution particle levels well below the recent safety standards. Ziyad Al-Aly, the study's senior author, said the research found an increased risk even with levels of air pollution now considered safe by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the WHO. Most of the industry lobbying groups discuss that the current levels are simply too high and is increasing every day. "Evidence shows that current levels are still not sufficiently safe and need to be tightened", Al-Aly said.

They examined data from 1.7 million US veterans who did not have any history of diabetes and tracked them for an average of 8.5 years. After controlling for all medically known causes of diabetes and running a series of statistical models, they compared the veterans' levels of diabetes to pollution levels documented by the EPA and NASA.

The experts also reviewed all studies linking diabetes and outdoor air pollution, and developed a model that can be used to measure diabetes risks across various pollution levels.

The findings raise the possibility that reducing pollution may lead to a drop in diabetes cases in heavily polluted countries such as India and less polluted ones such as the United States.

Previous research has linked air pollution with heart disease, stroke, cancer and kidney disease. This study attributed that 150,000 new cases a year are linked to air pollution. "We wanted to thread together the pieces for a broader, more solid understanding", he said.

In veterans exposed to air pollution between 5 and 10 micrograms per cubic meter of air, much less than the EPA safe level of 12 micrograms, approximately 21 percent developed diabetes. They also estimate that 8.2 million years of healthy life were lost in 2016 due to pollution-linked diabetes, representing about 14 percent of all healthy years lost due to diabetes of any cause.

In October 2017, The Lancet Commission on pollution and health published a report outlining knowledge gaps on pollution's harmful health effects.

The study was conducted by researchers from the Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri.
