Officer investigated for failing to help woman being harassed about citizenship

Dem rep 'Culture of bigotry & hate' now 'feels unleashed'

Irizarry originally posted a video of the harassment to Facebook, which has since been taken down.

In a statement posted to Twitter, the Forest Preserves of Cook County said, "We are aware of the the June 14 incident and video".

A video that went viral on Monday has earned a Chicago police officer desk duty for an incident that happened a month ago. He was arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct.

CNN has attempted to reach Trybus for comment.

Caldwell Woods is part of the Forest Preserves of Cook County.

Preckwinkle said Connor would face "disciplinary action" depending on the results of the Forest Preserves' investigation. "You know that right?" says the man, who appears to be intoxicated.

The woman said she tried to get the officer to step in, but he didn't respond immediately to her pleas for help. No, the world is not going to change the United States of America. At one point the officer can be seen walking away from her as she says, "Officer, I feel entirely uncomfortable, can you remove ... please officer".

Irizzary then tries to plead with policeman again, saying: 'Officer, I paid for a permit for this area, I do not feel comfortable here, is there anything you can do?'

"As you can see, the police are not even - he's not even grabbing him".

Later, more police arrive and Irizarry says she still doesn't feel safe. The video opened with the man approaching the woman, identified as Mia Irizarry, to dispute the status of Puerto Rico.

"Well, I guess you just never know", replied Irizarry.

More officers then arrive at the scene and a female cop sits Trybus down and threatens to charge him. She warns him that he could be arrested "for not being compliant".

A female officer tells Trybus, "you don't come here harassing people", adding, "when you're drunk you don't belong here".

Irizarry had rented a forest preserve pavilion to celebrate her 24th birthday and was issued a permit for the event.

Facebook A woman was attacked by this man at a park near Chicago because she was wearing a Puerto Rico flag shirt.

And politicians from Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle to Ricardo Rossello, the governor of Puerto Rico, condemned his idleness. He said he was "shocked, appalled and disgusted" when he watched the video.

"This is not the America we all believe in", he said.

'The United States of America is a nation that was built and thrives on diversity, ' Rosello continued in a separate tweet. We are proud USA citizens. "People need to understand that".

According to a Morning Consult poll, nearly half of Americans do not know that Puerto Ricans are USA citizens. "I was denied entry into the Capitol complex by U.S. Capitol Police despite being a Congressman with identification, because my daughter was carrying a Puerto Rican flag and the officer doubted that I could possibly be a Member of Congress".

The Trump administration has received criticism for its treatment of Puerto Rico, particularly for its response after Hurricane Maria struck last September.
