Officer resigns amid uproar over lack of response to woman's harassment

A Chicago man is accused of harassing a woman wearing a shirt of the Puerto Rican flag in a Cook County Forest Preserve after a viral video showed the confrontation. A forest preserve police officer is seen only in the background of a video above of

Forest Preserves of Cook County officer Patrick Connor resigned late Wednesday while officials investigate his response to a woman who said she was being harassed for wearing a shirt with the Puerto Rican flag.

Officer Patrick Connor had been placed on desk duty pending an investigation into the matter, and was scheduled to attend a hearing with his bosses on Thursday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Irizarry recorded the encounter on her phone, saying she felt threatened, and posted the video to Facebook.

"But that isn't where our work ends", they said in a statement, adding: "We are further addressing aspects of this incident". "At the same time, this video will help inform ongoing officer training so we can all learn from this unfortunate episode".

Timothy Trybus, 62, originally faced misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct charges for the incident where he angrily confronted the woman and told her she "shouldn't be wearing that" - referring to the shirt.

Irizzary then begins to talk to her Facebook Live viewers, saying: 'As you can see the police are not even, he's not even grabbing him'.

"Yes I am", Irizarry replied.

Mia Irizarry complained that a man at Caldwell Woods was questioning her citizenship and telling her she shouldn't be wearing the shirt, although Puerto Rico is a us commonwealth. "If you're an American, you wouldn't be wearing that".

"The world is not going to change the United States of America".

Mr Trybus continued to harangue Ms Irizarry for about 10 minutes before other officers arrived and arrested him. The footage showed the officer seemingly ignoring the woman's requests for his help as she explains that the man is harassing her and that she has a permit to be in the public space.

I was new and I was dressed somewhat casually because we were just returning from a Puerto Rican celebration and my daughter was carrying a Puerto Rican flag.

The incident was condemned by Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello, who said he was "appalled, shocked and disturbed" by the officer's behavior.

'He failed to deescalate the situation and therefore did not ensure a citizen's safety'.

On Monday, Forest Preserves of Cook County, which administers the park, tweeted that it was aware of the June 14 incident and video, and that it had launched an investigation. This is not the America we all believe in'.
