Oregon State wins College World Series, beating Arkansas 5-0

Arkansas couldn’t recover from its fatal blub

The Beavers (54-12-1), who won their fifth consecutive elimination game at Omaha, will be going for their third College World Series title after winning back-to-back crowns in 2006-2007.

Oregon State also got a bit of luck with Monday's rainout.

Arkansas was the national runner-up in 1979, the first of four times that retired coach Norm DeBriyn piloted the Razorbacks to the College World Series. And it's unfortunate, because Wes Johnson and Dave Van Horn made a lot of the right moves with the staff. Oregon State's aggregate output of 11 runs over three games was flat-out pedestrian, and save for catcher Adley Rutschman, the sudden and bewildering darling of ESPN's typically skewed commentators, the Beaver lineup wasn't almost as potent as others might have feared.

After he threw an inning on Wednesday, I thought that would take him out of the running to start Thursday's game, but that didn't stop Casey.

The stage was literally nearly set for the Arkansas Razorbacks to celebrate their first baseball national title Wednesday night. "And I'll probably go see somebody play tomorrow". Check out some of the best tweets from right after the game below!

How did Oregon State win it all?

Now, Abel doesn't care about any of that right now, and will celebrate his championship and one of the greatest pitching performances in CWS history.

Freshman Kole Ramage, effective Wednesday in relief, threw a 1-2-3 seventh with two strikeouts, but was touched for nine-hole hitter Zak Taylor's RBI single in the eighth.

Cesc Fabregas "speechless" as Spain exit 2018 World Cup
Sweden and Switzerland have both performed admirably at the World Cup but neither should strike fear into English hearts. Akinfeev pushed away a 109th-minute shot from substitute Rodrigo who ran hard at goal from near the halfway line.

Momentum is on Oregon State's side not only because of the fact it won Game 2, but due to the manner in which it happened. He never used more than 15 pitches to complete an inning after the third. But after winning their first two games here, they made a stunningly meek exit with two straight losses to LSU.

Arkansas third baseman Casey Martin called the win "a dream come true". Oregon State later tied the game and then took the lead in the inning to even the series. That the hardest thing in baseball is to record the final strike, the final out.

Arkansas losing starter Isaiah Campbell opened well Thursday with a leadoff groundout and an 0-2 count to Grenier, but finished the first down 2-0 on the scoreboard. His next pitch was way high and, after a foul ball, Grenier sent a drive into left field to score Clayton.

The Beavers have a far superior lineup, and Arkansas hasn't been potent offensively over the past few games. Bonfield remarked Abel was getting the shin-high strike from home plate umpire Joe Burleson - a hard pitch to hit when it's coming in at 92-93 miles per hour, Bonfield said. He hit a long ball with topspin over the rightfield fence to put the Beavers up 5-3.

"Going from the bottom of Arkansas baseball to the top, second place", Campbell said.

"On behalf of the entire state of OR, we are so proud of each and every one of you", Brown proclaimed. "... And then Abel just kept coming in saying, 'This is the easiest I've ever thrown.' He said, 'The ball's just coming out of my hand".

After the game, Abel said he was grateful the Beavers' coaches let him keep pitching. "Our smaller group of Oregon State fans trumped their noise", he said. "I don't think I could have come into college, asked for anymore from a fan base", he said.

One strike, one out from the Razorbacks' first NCAA baseball championship, giving coach Dave Van Horn, an Arkansas alum, one to go alongside Nolan Richardson for men's basketball in 1994 - and the program's friends in the media for the unbeaten 1964 Razorback football team. The Razorbacks reached the finals by going 3-0 in Bracket 2 by outlasting Texas, Texas Tech and Florida.
